DM #7: Ever wonder just how @rocktape works? With day 3 of the @crossfitgames East Regionals coming to a close, there was a whole lot of kinesiology tape on the athletes today, which begs the question, “does that stuff even do anything?” Because the nervous system and skin come from same embryologic tissue they are directly connected. This means that any time you touch the skin, you light up the brain. Tape on the skin provides a gentle constant stimulation to the receptors in and under the skin, which means constant information being sent to the brain!

Increased information being sent to and from an area means increased awareness of that area, which can allow for improved movement as our proprioception increases and we get reflexive normalization of the tissue tone. We refer to this this process the ‘neurosensory effect.' Kinesiology taping can also assist the body via decompression of the tissue, and pain mitigation. However, the neurosensory effect is by far my most favorite. And as for the possible placebo effect, sure, why not? Placebo is not a dirty word. If you think you feel better, then you feel better, and I'll take it.
