DM #9: Pain is a request for change, not punishment. Was doing some pain science research for an upcoming New Grad Physical Therapy article and came across this gem from Adriaan Louw. It's time to throw away that “no pain, no gain” mantra and get in line with the new model of “know pain, know gain.” Simply put, once we begin to educate ourselves regarding the complex nature of pain, we'll quickly realize that trying to muscle our way through pain and dysfunction is the fastest way to limit our gains, slow our progress, and end up in injuryville.
Want gains? Make the nervous system feel safe. Meet resistance with accommodation and a willingness to search for a new path. Choose to fight against your body and your body will win 100% of the time.
