DM #17: Saw this absolutely brilliant quote by my boy @joelavapt over at @perfectstridept and knew immediately that it has to be today's DM.
While teaching my @RockTape Movability course today, a young attendee asked me just how important it was that she regain the ability to do an unweighted deep squat. Well, given that it's one of our basic movement patterns, I'd say it's pretty damn important!
We tend to have a much easier time understanding the importance of having full functionality of other tissues like our nervous system or cardiovascular system, but apply a completely different set of rules to the musculoskeletal system.
Guess what, if you can't move, you can't exercise, you can't leave the house to socialize with other people, you can't go grocery shopping to buy healthy food (ok so you can order it online but you can't cook that healthy food once it's delivered so you'd best have enough money to get that organic stuff delivered to you ready to eat), you can't bathe yourself, you can't do much of anything. Suddenly you've gone from “just” musculoskeletal involvement, to global involvement: cardiovascular, endocrine, integumentary, immune, neurological, psychological. You name it, it'll get affected.
We hide behind the resiliency of musculoskeletal system, figuring that we'll be ok just avoiding those painful movements, not realizing the snowball effect that can in fact have.
Movement is medicine. Motion is lotion. Use it or lose it. Whatever catchy phrase you like best, insert it here. Respect all of your tissues, respect your body as whole, because IT'S ALL CONNECTED.
