DM #18: Initiate the squat with your knees and you're gonna get knee pain. Initiate a pull-up or push-up with your elbows, and you're gonna get elbow pain.
You don't get pain and injury from simply using a joint. You get it from using a joint incorrectly. Squatting gets a bad rep when it comes to the knees, because most people are squatting incorrectly and busting up their knees!
Stop blaming your joints and start correcting your movement patterns. Load things appropriately, sequence things correctly, and make sure each area is doing what it's supposed to be doing. Your ass is big for a reason (no judgment on how many cookies you had today ?) The next time you're gonna squat, make sure you use it. First.
