DM #21: Whether you are assessing a patient or working on your own patterns, you must remember that movement is not simply about getting into a shape, it's how you get there that matters.
All too often when I'm teaching my courses and explaining recommended assessment techniques, I see students so focused on whether or not their “patient” was able to get to the end position that they completely ignore how they got there!
If the person is holding their breath, using high threshold strategies, and/or compensating all over the place, I honestly don't care what their end position looks like. Movement is a journey, and as such, each step that is taken is just as important as the end product.
As Martha Graham said, “Movement never lies.” If your end product looks golden but your trip there was crap, then you're just full of hot air, and eventually it's gonna blow up in your face.
