DM #52: Seems like common sense, but no one likes to do what they're bad at, and when it comes to movement, we all seem to be eternal optimist, hoping that if we leave it alone and ignore it long enough, it will just get better on its own ?
If you've got one shoulder that weaker than the other, if you've got one leg that doesn't have as much mobility as the other, you must train them individually, and independently. Using both limbs at the same time with movements such as a barbell overhead press, or a squat, not only allows us to compensate by using the stronger side, but it allows us to close the circuit and generate increased torque and stability that we can draw upon in lieu of true localized stability.
So, while I know it's far from sexy, if one area is dysfunctional, make sure you work on that one area by itself and then start worrying about incorporating it into global movements. Regional independence before regional interdependence.
