DM #58: All movement occurs in three planes of motion. (Yes, at the same time!) As a refresher, those planes are as follows: The frontal plane (side to side), the sagittal plane (forward and backward), and the big bad boy, the transverse plane (rotation). Now, just how much each joint contributes to each of these planes depends on the movement. However, the recipe always remains the same. Don't have enough mobility in one plane? Steal from another. Don't have enough stability in one plane? Bleed into another.

Your body just wants to get the job done. It's not so particular in how, generally opting for the path of least resistance. Don't have access to, or own a particular plane? It's no problem. You have two others to steal from. Unfortunately, the end result tends to be dysfunctional movement and pain. See the post I did earlier today about knee pain and limited ankle dorsiflexion for an example of this.
Take-home message? Observe, assess, and intervene in all three planes We are not stick figures on a piece of paper. Looking at it from just one angle ain't gonna cut it.
