DM #66

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Work smarter, not harder! I knew I had seen a really good visual of this somewhere on the interwebs. The awesome @bretcontreras1 did an article about how femur length affects squat mechanics, and here's the image from it.
Both athletes are the same height, however, their torso and femur proportions are pretty different. Brett (right) has a short torso and longer femurs, vs Maren (left) who has a longer torso and shorter femurs.
When asked to to perform a high bar back squat, the effects of these differences in anthropometrics is immediately apparent.
Longer relative femur length necessitates more forward trunk lean in order to keep that bar over the midfoot. It's all physics, baby.
I'm gonna post the full article on my FaceBook page, so head on over if you want to read more. It's probably one of the best squat mechanics articles I've ever come across.
For those of you wondering why I posted this (aside from it being super dope) see last night's DM #66.

Lastly, and this is a bit of foreshadowing for tonight's DM, there's more to a nice squat than anthropometrics. Aka if your squat ain't so pretty, don't just assume you have long femurs and call it a day. It doesn't work that way. Stay tuned. #Maestrofied.
