DM #85: Changing it up a bit from my usual DM topics, but movement is movement, healing is healing, and pregnant patients will always have a special place in my heart.
For those of you who don’t know, despite the fact that that majority of my ramblings are about ‘orthopedic’ issues, I’m also a pelvic floor physical therapist. If you don’t know what that is, look it up…immediately.
When it comes to pelvic floor issues, postpartum issues, and heck, female issues in general, it’s hard to find quality resources, and the media has us thinking all types of crazy things. Just because some B-list celebrity got her ‘body’ back 36 seconds after having a baby does NOT mean that that is normal, or that her body is actually functioning well, despite what her outward appearances may have you think.
Incontinence, painful sex, pelvic floor dysfunction, diastasis recti, scarring, poor scar healing, musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, (the list could go on) are all very real issues that mothers deal with following delivery. While all of these can be successfully treated with the help of a pelvic floor physical therapist (shameless plug, I know, I know), the first step to helping women out is recognizing and acknowledging that these issues even exist! Despite the fact that it is ’normal and natural’ to have a baby, one’s body undergoes a tremendous amount of trauma in the process. My friend, and badass mom to Gaby Mac, @skofit wrote about this very topic a while back, and I’ve been meaning to make it a DM ever since.
As the young kids would say, “The struggle is real.” So whether you’re expecting, just had a baby, know someone who is expecting, or just want to be a properly informed human, take a second to think about how long it takes to create that awesome little person, and stop getting your info from Cosmo and US Weekly.
