DM #93

DM #93: yesterday we talked about C-section scars, today were going to take it down south a little farther. While this statement can apply to anything, it is especially true when it comes to urinary incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction following childbirth.

Far too many times I hear females say that they experience leakage with double unders, running, box jumps, sneezing, and basically anything that places stress through their pelvic floor. While this is a common occurrence after childbirth, it does not make it normal!

If you're reading this, and saying “holy smokes this is me,” or if you know someone who this directly applies to, my advice is as follows: GO SEE A PELVIC FLOOR THERAPIST! The sooner you get things assessed, the better. While I'm not saying that pelvic floor physical therapy can cure every single case of incontinence, irrespective of the severity or the cause, it's an excellent start, and far better than just quietly (or not so quietly) suffering.
Delivering a child vaginally is a tremendous stress to the pelvic floor, and let's not forget about all those weeks prior to delivery, when your pelvic floor is bearing the weight of that unborn child. Additionally, even if a C-section is performed, there may have been pushing prior to the C-section, AND that mama still had to use her pelvic floor to carry the child around for those same 40 weeks.

Not trying to scare anyone away from pregnancy with these last two DM's, (sorry if that happened?) but just wanted to bring awareness to a few issues that I see as a pelvic floor therapist that seem to be grossly overlooked, ignored, or simply not talked about.

Just because it's common, and perhaps a lot of your friends are experiencing the same thing, doesn't mean that it's normal. Get in and get assessed. There's a whole lot more to it than doing kegels.
