DM #98: Just finished up a continuing education class and the majority of the attendees were personal trainers. Now, there was a manual component to this course, and it was made clear that for those attendees who could not legally touch their patients, the appropriate modifications would need to be made.
Now, some folks might argue that the course should have been only open to licensed professionals. After all, if we give access to everyone then there will be no need for us. WRONG! There will be no need for you when you are no longer good at what you do. There will ALWAYS be a market for quality service. Always.
Now, I'm not saying that we should credential those who do not have the mastery of the material and don't demonstrate safety. Clearly that is the number one priority. A quick way around that is to have people test out, but that's another topic.
My point is simply that if you feel courses should only be open to certain people, make sure that your reasons are truly founded in safety, and not fear that you may lose business. We're not doing brain surgery here.
Enough with the turf wars, people. There is plenty to go around. Make sure you're good at your ? and you'll be just fine.
PS – I'm super passionate about this topic so I've decided to write an article about it for NGPT. Feel free to stay tuned for some more soapbox ramblings. ?
