DM #112: Straight fire from my dude, @joelavapt.
You know it, I know it, more patients need to know it. All practitioners are NOT the same.
And no, I’m not talking about the ones who are new to the game and just haven’t gotten their feet wet yet. I’m talking about the ones who seemingly just don’t care enough to look themselves in the mirror at the end of the day and ask if what they’re doing is truly their best effort. The ones who don’t question their methods and continuously seek to find better, more efficient, and more effective treatment techniques.
Physical therapy can be a very cushy job. In reality, most folks will get better simply because time has passed. To that end, I believe that our worth lies in our ability to get people better faster, to prevent recurrence of symptoms/injury, and ideally, to prevent things from happening in the first place. We are movement experts. We are educators. We need to be proponents for the resiliency of the human body, encouraging independence within our patients and empowering them to be their own best advocates.
If you’ve got a cookie-cutter approach, your best friends are ice, heat, stim, and ultrasound, and you can’t remember the last time you learned something new was during PT school, you’re doing both the profession and your patients a huge disservice.
For all you folks out there who are not providers of any sort, and simply read my ramblings because you find them amusing, please listen up. The system is broken, and the patient is typically the one who loses out. If you’re doing your part but it’s been months and you’re not getting better, if your sessions are largely passive (your practitioner is just putting you on heat and stim, and maybe doing a little massage) or if you just don’t feel like you’re getting enough out of your rehab, go somewhere else. All rehab is NOT created equal
