DM #113: Stop. Take a breath. Read it again. Let it marinate, make sense, and sink in.
All too often, when a patient presents with a painful area they assume that it's weak, and that they must smash it, release it, and then strengthen it. Slow your roll. Most of the time, the area that is in pain is the area that's doing the most work. It's taking on the job of other areas of the body, and it's finally starting to lose the battle.
If we incorrectly assume that this area is in pain because it is weak, then we will never search for the truly lazy and dysfunctional areas. Instead, we will continue to punish the areas that are in fact helping us, and are simply tired from doing all the work.
So the next time you find that something hurts, don't punish it. Give it some love, give it some rest, and then look somewhere else to figure out who's asleep at the wheel.
