DM #114: If you THINK something is going to hurt you, you bet your sweet ? you're going to move differently!
That nervous system of yours ALWAYS wants to feel safe. ALWAYS. If a movement has historically caused you pain, then your nervous system is going to be pretty hesitant to give you the green light and move with total freedom.
Why does this matter? Because if you're working on restoring movement patterns, regardless of whether you're the provider or the patient, you MUST remember the role that our thoughts and perceptions play. Fear is a great motivator, but it's also an equally good inhibitor. If it hurt in the past, you're going to move differently. If you think it's going to hurt now, you're going to move differently.
Remember, we're dealing with human beings, not just inert tissue. It all matters. Biopsychosocial model for the win.
