DM #172: People don't just let their pelvis tilt forward or their knees cave in for no reason.
The body always wants to feel safe and it's going to take the path of least resistance to get there. Lack the appropriate reflexive muscular control to perform a movement? Your body will find a way to control those forces, even if it means hanging on ligaments, resorting to boney approximation, or simply making things tight.
In doing so it has imported strength and stability to the system, and made the nervous system happy.
Clinical relevance: Stop yelling at your athletes to open their hips, or drive their knees out. Simply drilling the pattern will also likely not be sufficient. They're not moving that way because they're lazy but rather because they feel “weak” and unsafe in the proper positions. Until you make them feel strong and safe (subconscious functionality) in another position, they're going to go right back to that turtle-shelled, knees-kissing, hip never fully opening movement pattern. So figure out why, whether it's stability or mobility (spoiler alert: It's likely both) and proceed accordingly. *Note: This applies to EVERYONE with a body. Not just “athletes” ?
