DM #675: Fix what you can while you’re awake. I guarantee it’s a whole lot easier.

A while back I stopped recommending that people change their sleeping position. Why? Because it never worked. Folks got less sleep and for some, the one parasympathetic time of the day had now become a stressful time as they were constantly left wondering “am I in the right position?”

My number one recommendation, get into whatever position allows you to sleep. Now obviously there are some exceptions to the rule (namely post-op), so let’s feel free to not play that game right now. As it relates to everyone else, stop for a moment and realize that your sleeping posture is a result of your daily habits. Yes…what you do during the day can and will affect how you sleep at night 😱.

Part of me thinks that it’s the laziness in us that wants to believe it’s the other way around. Most folks aren’t getting nearly enough sleep, and yet we want to convince ourselves that it’s those 6 little hours that are ruining us, not the other 18. Then, continuing with this logic, we convince ourselves that a passive intervention of just lying there in a different way is going to get rid of the back pain we have during the day. 🤔

So, take home? Get some rest at night. Get some more movement during the day. Your body will thank you.
