MOTM# 198: Yoga Redefined: Incorporating the Essential with Kathryn Bruni-Young

Monday, March 30th, 2020

This week on the podcast I talk to Kathryn Bruni-Young, a woman who is shaking things up in the world of yoga by incorporating strength training and functional movement to the practice. It may not be the most traditional yoga approach, but in Kathryn’s own words, it is essential.

Kathryn noticed a lot of pain and weakness in herself and other yogis that kept leading to injuries. By learning (and teaching) mindful strength training, she realized it was the key to practicing yoga in a longer, stronger, and healthier way.

Not only is Kathryn an incredible yoga teacher and creative thinker, but she’s kicking ass in the digital space. With online courses and membership, her own Mindful Strength Podcast, and a brand new YouTube channel, Kathryn is one to keep your eye on.

In This Episode You'll Hear:

  • Who Kathryn is and her mission to bring strength and functional movement to yoga
  • Defining what yoga is, and other yoga terms
  • Incorporating pulling and up-regulation
  • Kathryn’s response to naysayers
  • What a class with Kathryn looks like
  • Kathryn’s online membership and programs
  • What its like to work with your partner
  • The journey to becoming one of the biggest names in yoga
  • Gaining the confidence to share your knowledge
  • Incorporating non-traditional modalities into a traditional art form
  • The concern with over-stretching
  • What variability looks like in mat-practice
