Hello there, my podcast people, and thank you for joining me for yet another episode of my favorite podcast. If I sound sick, it's because I am sick. I definitely picked up something while I was in Boise for craft and commerce, which is actually why I'm going to wait until next week to review the event and how dope it was going to keep this one shorter and talk about managing expectations, setting goals, getting things done as it relates to my process and how I'm able to Do things when things don't go according to plan because obviously this little sickness not according to plan So for those of you that don't know I am currently running a five day Summer celebration giveaway running it through Instagram.
If you haven't checked it out go check it out Courtney if you could link this why don't we link all the posts five days five different posts the day that this Episode drops only four of those posts will be out. The fifth one will be on Friday And then you'll have until Sunday July 3rd to like the post Tag two friends and make sure that you're following me and the company that I've tagged in the post So I'm currently running that giveaway And I also have all the other things that I normally do during the week and last weekend was a huge event Spoke had the had a an open the opening talk for craft and commerce's You ConvertKits Craft and Commerce Conference and to that end, people may be like, why would you put the giveaway the week after?
And when I was sitting and thinking about that, I actually shared this with my mafia and I was like, you know what, let me do a little episode about this because I think that there's some value in this. So number one, Um, I decided to run the giveaway this week because I wanted to, I wanted it to correspond with the start of summer, which honestly was last week, but I was at the conference and knowing myself and knowing how, you know, I would be gone to be out of town and all my energy and focus would be on the conference.
I couldn't run it that week, so I didn't want to push it back another week because then that means it's July 4th week. Don't want to start it off on a holiday. And for those of you who don't know, I am running a two hour webinar on July 5th at 4 p. m. PST called Action Academy. If you want to check that out, Courtney, thank you, we'll link that in the show notes for you.
So suddenly we see like, oh, am I gonna move it to July, you know, whatever date that is, 18th? That's just too far away. For some things that will never be the right or perfect time, and I knew how much energy would go into this. I've run giveaways before, and in setting this up, I had expectations of simply effort.
I didn't have expectations of, you know, this is gonna like blow up my account. I have really well established relationships with the people I reached out to for the giveaway, and I told them, hey, I just want to celebrate summer, I want to put you, the brand, in front of my people, and I want to give some stuff away.
Are you in? If no, that's totally fine. If you are, amazing. Let me know what you want to give away and I will take care of the rest. So really low bar there for me. I knew that it wouldn't be like this massive thing. And then my only expectation was that of my effort, right? That I would show up each day and create these posts.
Now, I also know how I operate and how I work. There is no way that I could have created those posts beforehand. It's just not how my brain works. And also my focus last week was on creating my talk for craft and commerce. Two talks actually, but really one that I had to do. The other one was just, you know, teaching on Instagram, which I can repurpose one of the 70 billion, 11 billion talks that I'd given.
So So, in terms of the, the key piece there, it was managing expectations, right? And having expectations of effort, not outcome. So that also is going to tie into setting goals. When I went into this, my goal was not to, you know, gain a zillion followers. And that's something that's also out of your control, right?
I focused on things that were within my control, which is showing up, creating the posts, And that's it, I managed, looked to manage the expectations of those people I was partnering with by telling them, Hey, I just want to get you in front of my people. I didn't say, Hey, you're going to get, you know, 11 billion new followers and you're going to do all of this.
It was simply, let's celebrate summer. Let's give some stuff away and let's get you, one of my favorite brands, in front of my people. That's the second part there with setting goals is that I prefer to set goals that I know I can hit. When I'm at, you know, about 75 percent of full capacity. This isn't about like, Oh, you are aiming low.
This is about me really liking to lean into, uh, what's the word? Momentum, right? Cause I know that if I hit, set a goal that I can hit at 75 percent on the days that I'm feeling a hundred percent. I'm going to smash that. I'm going to do more than that. But if I set goals that I can only hit when I'm at 100%, then things, you know, what is that, uh, it's not Parkinson's law, it's whatever law it is that what can go wrong will go wrong.
I know you folks are listening in your car, you're walking, whatever, and you're like yelling at me. I can't hear you, but thank you for knowing what that law is. So you're setting these goals that, you know, can only, you can only achieve when things go absolutely perfect. That, it's kind of setting yourself up for, for failure there.
So, you know, if you like setting those big lofty goals, Jill's a person that likes doing that. Cool, but she calls that a stretch goal. So she'll usually set three goals when she's looking at it from like a, an objective numerical perspective. And it's not like, I have to do this one. So this way she doesn't hit that, then she's like, okay, I hit this other one.
And now we can get clinical and go towards, you know, That is totally fine if you want to do it that way, but still I think there's a lot of similarities there in that the main goal is not this goal that can only happen if everything goes according to plan, and if forces outside of you, aka other people, do exactly what you want, because that's, that's just not how.
That's not how it works, right? So, leaning into this, we're talking, like, taking a step back, actually. The opposite there, taking a step back here in terms of what I feel, you know, contributes to my success and be able to get things done. And this is not about, like, you gotta get more done, you gotta do the most.
For me, and this is kind of what my talk was about at ConvertKit, it's about the happiness that I have. I can get things done that I want to get done. I play a ton of volleyball. I live where I want. And there's, you know, this balancing that goes on. It's not like, do more, do more, do more, do more, do more. I was reading a book and I totally, I think it was maybe Morgan Household's, uh, The Psychology of Money, and a loose paraphrasing was his definition of success was being able to do what you want, when you want, with whoever you want for as long as you want.
And I was like, yes, that's it. Alright, so it's not about, gotta get more done. I wanna, probably should have said that first, but I think all of you listening know me well enough that it's not like, how can you cram the most stuff in? It's how can you get the things done that you wanna get done. Even in the face of some unexpected things going on.
And with the unexpected things, the second part with that is that my baseline schedule is, for me, very predictable. I said it that way. And it's now routine for me. Now, I know as soon as I say that, for those of you with kids, that may not be the case. And I will, you know, die on this hill that my life is way easier because I don't have kids.
So, I am not ever trying to be like, We have the same 24 hours, get it together. Like, that is not the truth at all. Y'all live with kids, are superheroes. God bless you. Just sharing in my life. Story what I do. So in terms of my daily schedule, I batch my days based on energy, meaning the tasks that are similar have similar energy requirements, whether they're like externally facing where I'm client facing, all of those things happen on the same day.
So I do those on Tuesdays and Thursdays. That's when I do my client calls. And I also record podcast episodes or any other calls that I'm going to take Tuesday and Thursday. If I'm going to go and speak to someone's group, I try my hardest to schedule that for a Tuesday or Thursday. Wednesdays are more of my admin days.
I do my financial day. So anything that's more, you know, analytical, anything like that, I'm going to try and do it on a Wednesday. Oftentimes writing an email, I'll do that on Wednesday, writing an email for my, for my newsletter. I'll do that on Wednesday because I'm in that kind of space, that headspace.
Uh, if I have any mafia dinners, they also fall on Wednesdays and that's my legacy dinners. So I will typically do that kind of work as well because it's inward facing. So the outward facing days I put on Tuesday and Thursday, I give myself a break in the middle and do more of the inward, you know, stuff that I can do on my own.
I do a post every day because that's how I operate. I had a call yesterday with a client and we're talking about, you know, she likes more structure and I was like, cool, then we will structure your days. And if batching is the way to go for you, amazing, meaning batching your content that you're going to create multiple posts at once.
I cannot do that. I never have been able to do that when I had a full time job as a physical therapist, I would stay late. I would. you know, doing things during lunch. That's how I would create the content for the next day, for that day. It was very much on the, you know, in the moment. So knowing myself there and setting up my days, this allows me to just kind of, I don't want to say breeze through it, but this has become routine for me.
It's not, uh, I'm not wasting energy with things. task switching on each day. And I'm not surprised by like, Oh, wait, I gotta do this thing. Oh, wait, this client is on this day now. And like, oh, wait, I was supposed to be like, doing this one thing, but like, the client's scheduled there, so now I have to task switch and go and do this thing.
That's very hectic to me. Very chaotic. So, I don't do that. And that's gonna allow me to know how much time I have and when I have it to be able to do the other tasks. Whether it's that I need to, you know, create a talk or whatever it may be. So as it relates to this week, I had my regular things going on, right?
I had my Tuesday, Thursday, uh, coaching calls. And we're going to speak about the Thursday call in a second. Thursday calls in a second. I have, uh, actually a, the final discussion, the final call for legacy tonight, I have a mafia dinner tomorrow night, Thursday night, and. That's it. That's my normal routine there.
So, as it related to the giveaway, I knew that I would have these things this week, so I set the bar where it needed to be set for the giveaway, and my only expectation for the giveaway is that I will create a post. Now, leaning into that even more, I'm gonna create a post that feels good for me. I've been doing actually some of these skits, uh, which I'm having a lot of fun with, right?
I could do anything I want for that. Giveaway post. I could make it a static image, but I wanted to make it a reel because you know Instagram is really pushing reels Right now so that also furthered my or lessened any Kind of desire that it may be or inkling of a desire that I had to care and be concerned with I should say to Be concerned with the outcome Of it going to so many people and gaining so many people and getting so many likes and getting so many Follows and comments because I've never run a giveaway through reels so you never know what reel is gonna hit and what isn't and I went with reels that were a bit longer because I'm doing Some skits because that's what I knew I could show up as, and it felt good, and that was going to allow me to show up.
So again, my focus, my expectation, was simply on me showing up and doing what I needed to do to enable that, allow that, which was, which is, posting in a way that feels good for me. We will definitely do another episode about this. I had a conversation just recently with one of my favorite clients, and, uh, you're all my favorite, I probably should say that.
Uh, but, we were talking about, um, You know, Instagram is kind of forcing our hand right now. And what should you be doing? And I have a few things, a few ideas about that. So we'll come back to that, uh, discussion, that topic. Later, so the last thing I want to talk about is what happens if you do have all these things in place And you're just like I cannot do it.
Maybe you get sick, and you're just like I can't homie cancel that shit That's it you cancel it if you're like I just physically cannot do this is too stressful Then you cancel it. It's my opinion that ideally before you've done all this, you have this amazing relationship with people, whether it's your community on Instagram, your clients, whatever, and they know that you're not just a, you know, you're not just a fucking flake.
So if you have to reschedule something, they will understand. We will absolutely also do a, an episode on, uh, people pleasing. Cause I had a, some insight, a little glimpse into that when I did the, that ride. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw that a few Saturdays ago, I, Ashley and I just hopped into this Jeep Caravan and drove around with them all day.
But at the end of the day, I was like, I want to do something else. And I could see where people who are people pleasers would be like, but I have to go to this thing I don't really want to go to. And so I want to talk about that. But we're gonna save it for another episode because I believe Courtney is also under the weather and I don't want her to have to edit some long ass episode.
This is supposed to be a Thursday shorty. So what I was saying, final point, if you're just like, I cannot Do it. I have everything in place and I put all the things and my schedule is, you know, pretty consistent. It's routine. I can get everything done. I get them done every week. Well, whatever came up, I just cannot do it.
Then say no. All right. I was actually, you know, at ConvertKit and I was talking to, uh, one of my, my favorite speakers there, Glow. And she had also gotten asked or been asked to do a breakout session. She was just like, you know what? As awesome as that would be, like, I had to say no. She was like, I said yes to the main stage.
I just couldn't do, also do that other thing. And that's amazing. Absolutely amazing. I said yes because that's all of the energy that I, you know, was needed to expend, right? I wasn't doing other things. I wasn't coming off of some super stressful time. Actually, the week before, I had gone on, quote unquote, staycation, right?
I, I canceled calls. I think it was either the first or second week of June. Canceled calls, just chilled out, did other stuff. Uh, so that I would have the energy going into Convert because I knew that that was going to be a big, big, big weekend. So, if you're just like, dude, I cannot do this. Cancel it. It's okay.
Cancel it. The flip side of that is, I think, if you find yourself continuously cancelling things, then you need to take a step back and be like, how can I organize this? How can I organize my energy? What, what is going on here? So that, or am I, am I saying yes to things that I just shouldn't be saying yes to, right?
But I think that's perhaps a little bit of a different discussion. The main point that I want to bring up here is that it is okay to say no. And so, I actually canceled my calls tomorrow, Thursday. All of my clients, they're fucking phenomenal. And I messaged them and I was like, if you need me, you can box with me, but I know that I can't show up for you the way that I want to show up for you.
I'm recording this podcast now, and then I'm gonna, this podcast episode, and then I'm gonna go to sleep. I did leave this one until very, kind of the very last minute, uh, because I knew that I could based, based on how my schedule is. And I was waiting before like, ah, like I wanted to review the convert kit episode review.
Oh my goodness. Review convert kit for the episode. And I was like, I just don't have that in me. So changed it doing this episode and then contacted my peeps and was just like, Hey, I, I can't tomorrow. I cannot show up for you the way that I want, so let's reschedule for whenever you want. It's okay to do that.
If any of you are listening to this and you're like, Why are you recording this episode right now? Because I know that I can, right? This is not an externally facing thing. This is not, you know, being present for someone and really listening and reflecting. reflecting and providing solutions. This is just talking which is something I can do when I'm even at like 25 percent so that is why and that ties into that first point of knowing myself knowing what I can get done you know the goal setting of like hey, I will set goals and I know I can hit when I'm at 75 percent and This is a goal that I know I can hit of just creating an episode even when I'm 25 percent just because I've done this is what episode 300 billion like I've done enough of these that is why but if That's not you and you're like, I just cannot put this episode out.
I can't do that post. I can't run that giveaway I'm too sick. Whatever. They don't please then do not stop cancel it reschedule that shit and crush it when you feel like you can, right? When you have the capacity. All right, that is it. I'm not even going to review the episode. You can rewind it. I believe in you.
I'm so grateful for you. Uh, but I want to give myself a break, give Courtney a break, and give you all a big, huge thank you. As always, I'll see you Endlessly, endlessly, endlessly appreciative for every single one of you. Go check out those links in the show notes.
