Hello, hello, hello. My podcast people. Thank you for joining me for yet another episode of my favorite podcast. So you folks actually don't know. I did, I clap before my, I'm saying this cause my ears are ringing right now. I clap. Before I start the episode so that I can sync up the audio. I, if you've listened to every episode that I've ever done, then you know this cause I've spoken about it before, but sometimes I clap so loudly and then it makes my ears ring and I like start, I'm like, I'm just going to push through and I'm going to just start recording.

And I'm like, I'm recording, but like my ears are ringing. So letting you in on that. Uh, but welcome to the show. Uh, if you're listening or watching the day that it drops, it is Monday, December 9th, happy December 9th. Uh, today we're talking about running your business. However, you. I got a little up announcement, a little updates before, and then we will hop right into that.

So, uh, the update, life update is that Thanksgiving passed, just passed, and it's my favorite holiday. It was the best. It's always the best. Uh, we go to my family's house, my sister's house, my mom comes, my grandmother, my aunt, my uncle come. Uh, my, my sister's obviously there with her husband and her two kids.

My brother's there. His girlfriend came. For part of it, uh, my other brother was not, was not home. He's in the, he's in the Marines. So he was out in, in San Diego, but we FaceTime with him and it's just like, it's my favorite holiday. It's relaxed. It's chill. It's about food. People can do whatever they want.

No one's forced to talk about anything or do anything. Although we all have the same views on things. So it wasn't like, you know, some disastrous Thanksgiving or anything like that, but we're like avoiding topics. Like we were all on the same page. Um, it's just super supportive environment, um, which like Lex, You know, we're talking about it and she was just like, wow, like I have not been around a family that is like that.

And I was like, and speaks like that. And I was like, welcome. Um, so we all went to the gym. I had my sister, uh, Jimmy, Justin, Lex, and me went to the gym twice. We're going to go three times. We ended up going twice. It was just so good. It's my favorite holiday. It fills me up. It's cool. Cause it's like, you know, this year it's like further, you know, closer to December, um, because of the way that the.

The days fell, the Thursdays fell. So in, I mean, in December, like on a high, just, it was great. It was cold, very cold, uh, but it made it feel warmer coming back here. So just, I love that holiday. Y'all know I'm always about sharing my joy and that holiday. Thanksgiving brings me so much joy. Hopefully. Yours was not terrible.

Hopefully yours did bring you joy, but if it didn't, hopefully it wasn't too terrible. Uh, and if it was terrible, hopefully you can change that moving forward. So that is my update. Uh, the announcement I have is that, uh, moving forward. So from January, starting in January, I'm going to cut this, the podcast down to just one episode a week.

Uh, we'll put it out on Monday. I don't know if I'm going to pivot the podcast or what, but either way, I will still have this Monday release date. And. That's the, it's the announcement. I've enjoyed doing it this year with the two episodes, bringing back the previous episodes. But I'm like, I'm good. I'm want to change it.

And I want to run my business how I want, which is the theme of today's podcast episode. So we're going to be doing one a week starting in January. So what kind of prompted today's episode and the topic of today's episode is this actually a Cyber Monday sale, which I'm currently running. The day that you're listening to this, it's no longer going on.

But the day that I'm recording this, uh, it's, it's happening today. Um, it's going well. And. I'm doing it how I want, right? It's 24 hours only, which some folks may be like, it's not enough time, but I'm like, fuck, it's all that I want to sell it for. Uh, I am running it, uh, offering a discount. I'm about to, I'm going to change the prices on these things as I change the courses.

I move them from webinars to courses. Spent like the better part of an entire week, just cutting them down, editing them, taking out all the fluff, organizing them so that they're better. He's more, they're easier to consume. Uh, and in my opinion, easier than to implement the information and easier to go back and, and reference things.

So I will be raising the price on those. Um, Because I want to and because I changed the things, um, the episode actually that was supposed to drop on December 2nd podcast episode didn't come out, but I'm not going and fixing that because I don't want to. I'm running my business how I want, because I'm nervous that if I update the website, it'll fuck up the website and I'm running the sales of the website.

So I'll just put it on Tuesday. All that to say, I'm just giving some examples of running my business, how I want to be running my business. Specifically what I'm selling in the Cyber Monday sale is courses on how to run different things within your online business, email marketing, um, the audio visual side of things, webinars, making online courses, things like that.

I am extremely proud of the content that I've delivered in those courses, but what I really want people to take home from those courses is to do things. In the way that fits them, right? Do things how they want to do them and how works for them, right? I can and will always share what works for me and how I enjoy doing business.

But my goal with people I'm working with and with you fine folks is that you figure out what works best for you. And you lean into that, right? I know that some folks just want to be told what to do and I don't judge them. For that, right. I run two coaching programs, lecture mine and legacy where that's largely what we do.

Um, but in both of those programs there, I still do have that underlying push and that underlying goal or overarching goal for folks to figure out how they want to do things, which is one of the, one of the most beautiful things in my opinion about running legacy with Jill is that we do do some things slightly different, same values, but certain things slightly different.

Um, and that exposes people to different approaches of how to run their business and how to approach their business. And then people can try them out and then they can choose, or they can mix and match. They can take what serves them, leave the rest. And I love that. All right. Y'all know autonomy is sexy.

So you, fine listener, fine viewer, I have no idea where you are in your business, um, but I am very much immersed in the online business world and things like threads, especially threads. Threads has been kind of negative lately. I got to like change my algorithm over there. Um, but. You know, things like threads and in my emails, because it's Cyber Monday, just being, I'm just being inundated by marketing, marketing language and marketing efforts from people that are telling folks like, do it this way.

This is the only way to do it. And I'm almost creating this, like, I don't want to say this false demand, but it was like making things in my opinion, Seem more important and that than they are, which I'm cutting myself off because like that is at the heart of like traditional marketing. It's like, it's like psychological, right?

And we see it with cyber Monday things like that. We're like, you don't fucking need that thing. Like you don't need it. You actually don't need it. You can buy it. I won't judge you for buying it, but you probably don't need it, you know, myself included. But the What I'm seeing in the online space and, you know, in my inbox is not just being inundated by all these things, but the fact that there's a lot of different things being pushed and a lot of different ways of doing things, which should serve as proof that you can run your business however you want to run your business.

All right. But for folks that are just starting out, it definitely tends to be more confusing than anything. And I can put myself back into that place and be like, there's a lot of different things you can do. And like, you're, I just don't like that. This kind of time, actually I was saying before, I just don't like when people are like, almost acting like if you don't do it this way, you're going to fail, like, this is the only way to do it.

Cause that I think does create more confusion for people. I wonder what it would be like if people were like, Hey, there's a bunch of different ways you can do it. Here's how I do it. And you know, here's why I do it this way. If you want to try that. Cool. And just leaning on that marketing as opposed to like, you know, it's part, it's so close, it's just a fine line of being like, this way guarantees success and this is the only way.

And some people are not quite saying that, but it's like such a fine line, such a fine line that I'm just like. Especially when it comes to online business. Certain things I do think have more clear cut. Like this is the way that you do it. This is the most efficient way to do it. But online business, man, there's just so many different ways to do it.

And it's just like, ah, that language, that messaging, it definitely makes me feel some kind of way. Right. So circling back to what I was saying of, I don't know where you're at in your business, but if you are just getting started with something, your best bet is to pick someone who you trust and then listen to them.

And, you know, I'm thinking back to the people I chose and I chose Pat Flynn and I listened to him. But I also had people around me that I knew directly. I'm thinking about Jen, Dr. Jen Fitt. Like she's the one that was like, Hey, use ConvertKit. And I'm trying to think like, why even end up with Kajabi? Um, but I know that a lot of stuff that I did initially is because I, it was people that I trusted and they were like, do this.

And I was like, okay, I'm just going to do that. And I'm going to not go into it blindly, but I'm going to do that. And then if it doesn't work, I'm going to know why I don't like it. Right. Or if I don't like it, then I'm going to know why I don't like it. And then I can change the thing. So I just need to get started.

Right. So it's not just being like, whatever they say is Bible and you know, it's all I'm going to do. And I don't want to hear anything else. It's like, Hey, I'm going to go in this direction because I trust this person and trust their values. I like what they have, the lifestyle that they have. That's a big thing.

Right. And I like their values. And from that, I'm going to. Try things out. So if that's you best bet, pick someone who you trust, listen to them. Ideally don't spend a zillion fucking dollars because you're not making any fucking money yet. Right. And getting started an online business, you don't, that's the most beautiful part about online business is that the overhead is so fucking low.

Right. So speaking of low overhead and not spending a ton of money, I have a free course. I didn't put it on sale, obviously during Cyber Monday. I'm thinking about this because someone wrote to me and they're like, Hey, which of these things that you have, do you think I should start with? And I was like, actually.

Start with this thing. And then this other free thing that I didn't talk about because it's free and it's, it's always available. But, uh, as a reminder, I have a free course. It's called the foundations and fundamentals of online business. So if you're just getting started and you're, you're like, where do I start?

What do I focus on? Where do I invest my time? How should I invest my money? Uh, you know, should I get a coach? I answer all of that and it's free. It's 100 percent free. Yes, you have to put your email address in there, but if you want to fucking unsubscribe from my email list after that, that's fine. Like I just want this information out there.

I want you to be able to get started in a way that's actually going to set you up for success. So we will link that in the show notes. Thank you, Courtney and Jojo. But yeah. If you zoom out, yes, I'm still thinking about election stuff. And like I said, a few episodes ago, my action item is to keep doing what I have been doing, but to do more of it, right?

M O A R. And the tangible thing that I do is I help people build profitable online personal brands, right? So if I think about the election and what I can do and the problems that were there, and what bothered me is that part of the problem with the election is that greed is a fucking problem, right?

People are voting based on inflation. Their, their understanding, which is. Not very good of inflation, right? Inflation is not a bad thing. Inflation at 2 percent we're happy about. Inflation at 7, 8, 9 percent we're not happy about. But at the end of the day, inflation is caused by greed. Like let's just call a fucking spade a spade.

Yes, supply and demand comes into play, but how much of a profit margin people actually want and demand and keep wanting to go after is what causes the prices to keep going up and up and up and up. So I refuse to coach that. I refuse to coach based on like, just make more money. Just make more money. Make the most money.

Like, yes. And let's figure out what enough money looks like for you. People are out there voting because they're fucking unhappy. And so they're like, I'm gonna make other people fucking unhappy. Having a business that actually makes you money can change that. It can make you happy. Having a business that brings you purpose, a sense of purpose, and you're actually helping people.

It can change that. It can make you happy for sure. That's why I coach this. That's why, that's my action item here. People are out there, you know, not having time to sit and research things. They're not having the capacity to actually have conversations with people because they're just so fucking burnt out from their job and from life.

Having a business? It doesn't have to be a full time business. It can be a part time kind of thing that brings you some extra money where you can help people and you can make money and change your life in that way. That can change this thing and give people the capacity to go and have conversations. So that's what my action item is.

Helping people build businesses in this way, right? Build profitable personal brands, profitable businesses, online businesses in this way. So I probably should have titled this episode a better way to do online business, but I didn't want to. I think maybe I already have an episode like that, which maybe if I do, then it'll be Thursday's episode.

But at the heart of all of this is doing business your way, right? I do believe that this is a better way, but it's better based on my goals, my views, my opinions, my beliefs, my values, and ultimately the goals that I hear a lot of people that come to me, which they're coming to me likely because I'm sharing my values and beliefs and such.

But that's why I think it's better. Ultimately, it is, like I said in the intro, very intro part, it's me giving permission to trust your gut, permission that you don't need to trust your gut, to try new things and do what feels good for you. That to me is a better way to run a business. So yes, when it comes to running a business, there are some general business principles to consider, but I think it's three, it comes down to three things, competency, demand, and actually caring about your people.

I made a little schematic of this little triangle, and maybe I'll take some time and like kind of dive into this more, but if I was to think about this like as a triangle and those three parts being competency, demand, and actually caring about your people, the competency part would be like, The business aspect of things, the demand would be the audience side is like relate to the audience side of things.

And then caring about your people. I'm going to put that as like the universe side of things. And we want all three sides of this triangle, right? When it comes to the actually caring about. your people that can look like a bunch of different things and I will also likely sit with this as well because I came up and I'm like, Oh, I want to dig more with this.

But to me that largely comes down to the John Wooden quote, or I keep attributing it to him. I actually don't know if it's him. So whenever I Google it doesn't come up, but I think it's him. Um, which is it's not what you know, that matters. It's what they learn. All right. So to me, caring, It speaks more to the fact that you care more about the impact that you have than the actual message that you're delivering, right?

You care more about how people's lives change because of hearing your message than you do about how your life changes because you're delivering the message, right? I'm sitting and I'm watching some people. I have someone in mind right now, step into their own and like, I'm kind of like, I feel like what's more important to this person is that they get their message out more so than is the message being received?

Is it impacting people's lives? Are they actually doing something with this or are they just hearing it and then going about their life? To me, that third part of the triangle, that caring is really caring that. People, it's what they learn, right? They go in and when we're looking at, did you learn it? It means you can actually implement and do something.

It's not just I, that they heard it. I, when I look at all the people that I've worked with and I look at the folks who have experienced traditional success, whatever that looks like, you know, whatever you want to define that as, they all have, they all have those three things. They have competency, meaning they're really fucking good at what they do.

You have to be really good at what you do. The second thing is demand, right? There is a demand in the public for this thing. And part of that may require you to just like stay with this thing long enough for the demand to build, right? I'm thinking things like, um, pelvic floor PT where like, it's booming now, but like I watched it start and it wasn't booming then.

And then that third part, caring. And I think that the reason I kind of have this as a triangle and that we need all three sides is that I feel like I see people have two and I'm like, but you need that third. All right, where they'll have the competency, they're really good at what they do, and they really care about people like being able to do something with the things that they are that you're teaching.

But like there just isn't that much demand, right? And we need that third part there. And that breaks my heart for people. I'm like, Oh, Or, you know, maybe, you know, I'm trying, I'm looking at this thing and I got to work through it, but like definitely all three sides are needed. And I think that when we just have two sides, either it won't work or it could be like really negative in my opinion.

Right. So I'm thinking about like competency is there, Especially just in terms of like running a business center for traditional capital, capitalistic society. And the demand is there and they're like, don't give a fuck about like their actual people. And so like, they can make this massive business, but it's like, is this good for people?

Is this like helping us? Is it, are you just making a shit ton of money? Right. They care more about how the message makes them feel, how delivering the message makes them feel as opposed to like, is it actually impacting people's lives? Are they changing things? So

obviously. You also have to take action as well, right? You need all three things there, but then you feel like go and do the thing. But those are the, in my opinion, the three biggest dial movers to, to focus on, right, the, uh, competency, demand, and actually caring about the audience. Care about your people.

So, you know, I'm watching, again, I'm watching my inbox get bombarded with messaging about the perfect way to run a business, and I'm just like. Like, I, like, I love Ramit, but I kind of just wish he would stick to couples finance. I feel like what's happening with some of these people that, that actually, like, I do think he like genuinely does care about people, but at the end of the day, they're teaching you how to win a broken game.

It's teaching you how to win the game. And I want to help people escape the game. And I was revamping my courses for. The Cyber Monday and moving them over. And I came across the slide that I did in one of them. Um, and it's a picture of Daenerys from Game of Thrones. And that's exactly what the slide was about.

It said, I'm here to break the wheel and I'm not here to perpetuate the same thing and figure out how to win that game. I want to fucking break the wheel. I want to help people escape the game. All right. I actually have a quote, a tattoo on my side that says, it's from Buckminster Fuller and it says, you never change things by fighting the existing reality.

To change something. Build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. That's what I want to help people. So the message of today, the summary of today, you want something different. You're going to have to do things differently. Be willing to do things different. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Uh, and as it relates to my action item of helping people build these profitable personal brands, these profitable online businesses, to me, that comes down to running your business, how you. Want to run your business. All right, that's all I got for you. I'm looking at the time. This is a good one. We'll wrap it up here.

As always, endlessly, endlessly appreciative for every single one of you. Until next time, friends. Maestro.
