DM #220: Education is paramount, but if behaviors don’t change, if words don’t become actions, if things aren’t actually DONE, your treatment is incomplete.
I always preach about being weary of the pendulum swinging too far (it inevitably always does) when it comes to trends, fads, new ideas, and well, basically anything. Pain science is a HUGE issue in the rehab world right now, rightfully so, but we must make sure that we don’t let the pendulum swing too far.
Talk to your patients. Educate your patients. Discuss pain science with your patients. But make sure that your patients are actually DOING something. Examples: Right-Left discrimination (google it and check out @noigroup), visualization, introduction of pain free movements, repatterning of painful movements, dietary changes, breathing, movement, self treatment, bodywork, acupuncture, lifestyle changes, energy work, meditation, the list could go on and on.
Take home message: Don’t let the pendulum swing too far. Pain science is about WAY more than just educating your patients and telling them that pain is not in their tissues. Educate yourself, learn the nuances, see the bigger picture, and then implement accordingly.
