Hello, hello, hello my podcast people and thank you for joining me for yet another episode of my favorite online business podcast. If you are listening, if you're tuning in, if you are watching the day that this drops, it is Monday, October 5th. Welcome to October.
PSLs, pumpkin spice lattes, they're officially okay and that means that they will officially be gone in 0.2 seconds so that Starbucks can start pushing that fucking disgusting peppermint drink two months too early because hashtag capitalism. That's all I gotta say about that. I have thoughts and I'm like, you know what, that's all that I'm gonna say about that.
I was like, should I go in the rabbit hole of pumpkin spice lattes? Maybe actually I will. If you like them, drink them. I used to like them and then I started making all my own, you know, the espressos, things like that.
But what I will say is that Lex orders this pumpkin spice coffee. If that's you and you have and you want to make it home and you want to make it an espresso, do not put those beans into your grinder, your expensive fucking grinder. Get yourself like the regular like whatever $20 hand grinder, not hand grinder, they're still plugged in, right? Automatic.
Get yourself one of those little grinders that you know you use when you're trying to make cold brew or whatever and grind as fine as you can using that and then put it into your portafilter. Don't put those expensive, don't put those beans in your expensive grinder. The oils that they put on them or whatever they roast it with in order to get the pumpkin spice flavor, they will fuck up your grinder, okay? Moving on, today we are talking about a subject that I just can't quit no matter how hard I try, but spoiler, I have actually never tried to quit it, and that's Instagram, all right? More specifically, I want to talk about should you start another Instagram account.
So if you've been in my ecosystem for like any point in time, but definitely if you've been in there for a bit, you know that one of my favorite phrases, courtesy of my lady Erica Bonilla, is you can't ride two horses with one ass. I still to this day firmly believe that and I preach it and I teach it every opportunity that I get, but I'm also not in the business of convincing people and thus I'm not here to convince you to do something or to not do something. What I am much more fond of and what I find myself doing pretty much regardless of the situation is future pacing people.
For example, all right, and it's specific, you know, specific to this instance, is go ahead and start another account, but if you get overwhelmed slash annoyed by having two accounts, give yourself grace to just have one, right? Or go ahead and start another account, but make peace with the fact that the growth will likely be slower than if you could just give your attention to one account, all right? So there's a few points I want to cover in this episode and a few angles that I want to take, but you know, namely I'm saying this about the few angles because I know that some of you have already started a second account and you are listening to this episode, one, because you just listen because you're the best, but if you are listening specifically because I'm talking about another account, you're listening, you know, for a blessing from me that you don't actually need, right? So that is a big reason as well that I am doing this episode, but one of the coolest parts about getting older is that the people around you also get older. Nothing happens, you know, in a vacuum. When that happens, the things that these people tend to come to you with, right? The problems that they are looking to have solved, that's the business that you're in, that's the business that I'm in, it's all helping people solve their problems, right? The things that they bring to you, they change and right now what I'm seeing is really fucking cool in my opinion.
I got a lot of people in their 40s, I'm 41, I got people in their 40s who have been doing the online business thing or who have been in the online space for like many, many years now and they now have what they're calling a quote-unquote weird relationship with Instagram. I get it, right? Namely it's that they still do like it and they want to keep using it, but they don't really like what they've been talking about and they're like, I'm just kind of like over it. It's not exciting to me and so I have this weird relationship.
I don't really want to post, but like I want to post and I get it, right? I have a dope homie in my crew 52 who is thinking about the future and hit me up and was like, I don't want to be doing this in 10 years, but I do think that what I'm doing now or what I do now rather, I do think that what I could do now could help me in 10 years and that's, you know, another reason that I'm excited about this potential, you know, this potential new type of content and I'm like, fuck yeah. I love this. I absolutely love this.
I also love Instagram, right? I have always loved Instagram and I probably always will love Instagram. Like there's many things about it that I don't like, but as a whole I really like being on the platform, right? People oftentimes jokingly say, I hate it here and honestly I don't hate it here. I love it.
I really, really love it. I really enjoy it, right? I learn things. I'm entertained.
I connect with really fucking awesome people. I use it to run my business. I fucking love it, right? So people talking to me about figuring out ways to stay on there and ways to use it to help them build their future dream life.
I'm so fucking here for it, right? So back to the original question, should you start another Instagram account? My first answer is you're going to do what you're going to do, right? So do what you're going to do. Do what you want to do. But my second answer and realistically the most important thing that I think you can ask yourself and that you can consider when you're asking yourself the question, should I start another account is what is your goal? Right? A few different answers here.
A few different things to think about here. If your goal is to just have a creative outlet, then heck yeah, start that other account. You probably already started it and you've probably been posting there, right? Absolutely.
Again, expectation management here and focusing on your goal, right? If the goal is actually just to have a creative outlet then and not, you know, have that account do numbers and go viral. Yes, right? If you're trying to have that account go viral, then you better just be fucking focused on that thing. That's all it'll solely that account, right? Starting another account.
If your goal is organization, that's how your brain works and keeping these things separate. If you know you have that current account and you're like, I kind of want to talk about something a little bit different. If it makes, feels like it makes sense to have a different account.
And I really know if you really feel like the content that you want for this new account really needs its own account, then go ahead and start the second account, right? The big question, the big follow-up question to ask yourself here is, do I actually need that second account or can I just put it all in one, right? Which maybe you can, maybe you need to have it in separate ones. I am not here to answer that question for you, just here to ask that. If your goal in starting another account is just wanting a fresh start, abso-fucking-lutely start that new account, right? I have a client who also in Griffity 2, another fucking awesome, awesome person in Griffity 2 who started a new account on a new platform.
And that feels most ideal, honestly, if your goal is truly like a fresh start, fresh eyes, fresh everything. She's pretty prolific in her stories anyway on Instagram and moved over to TikTok and she is fucking loving it, just loving it. And that was just her goal, was just like, I just want to talk to new people.
I have no expectations around this. I just want to talk to new people and have it be, feel light and fresh and fun. That's what she's doing.
By all means, yes, start that new fucking account then. If your goal is to get consistent, right? And having the current, if you're, let me explain that. If your goal is to get consistent with content creation and you're like, I like this account that I already have, but like I want to post consistently on here.
But the people who follow me, maybe it's your family and I have thoughts about this, but I'm not going to go into that right now. You're like, my family's watching this and that's going to stop me from posting. Then fucking start a new account and don't tell them about it.
Don't tell anybody about it. Just start and start posting, right? Because at the end of the day, I want consistency. And if there's any kind of friction, it'll stop.
It'll prevent, I shouldn't say stop, it'll prevent that consistency. So by all means then start a new account and start posting there. If you find that you start posting on there and you're just like, actually, I'm sick of having to, and I'm gonna go back to my other one and just be consistent over there.
Consistent over there. Great. All right.
You can use the momentum. I'm all here for it. I just want people to get started and keep going.
If your goal is to build an audience behind this new topic that you're like, hey, it warrants a new account, then by all means start a new account. But understand that your best bet, if you're trying to grow an audience on an account is to go all in on that account. It's not to try and ride two horses with your one booty, right? If any part of your goal involves sustainability, it involves longevity, long-term planning, right? I want you to set your action items accordingly.
Meaning planning on posting every day on two accounts ain't gonna happen for a long time. If it happens at all, a lower frequency is much more feasible. If you're like, I'm gonna do it once a week, once a month, right? But then that needs to be met with the same type of, I don't want to say expectations, because you cannot expect an account to grow at a certain pace.
It's going to do what it's going to do, but you got to manage this reality of if you're posting once every never, that account is not going to grow nearly as fast as it possibly could if you were posting more, right? So make sure that your goals align with your actions, okay? So we said first thing to consider if you're like, hey, should I start another account? Is one, you're gonna do what you're gonna do. So if I can just do it anyway. Number two, it's asking yourself, what's my goal? Number three, right? It's to ask yourself and answer honestly, what is your capacity, right? Or asking yourself, what is my capacity? I am thinking about someone right now name you, Katie, talking about you, right? She really is a type A big capacity person.
And she's gonna ask me, should I do things? And she's gonna do them anyway. And she gets my blessing because she has a massive capacity, and she will lean into it. She's very honest, but with herself about things, right? And she pushed and she was like, I don't have two accounts.
And I was like, all right. But running two accounts is very, very tough. And realistically, what's typically ends up happening is one account just inevitably gets a lot more of your love and your attention.
So if you are hellbent on keeping both accounts active, then you have to have the capacity for it. Period, right? You have to be honest with yourself about this. Most often where I see people wanting to have multiple accounts is folks who have a brick and mortar business.
And they want to also have a personal brand. I often times like this because of my niche, it's people that have brick and mortar public, it depends on the public floor, but just physical therapy practices in general. And then they also want to have a personal brand that's just their account.
You can do it. But where I see this actually doing the best is when they outsource at least one of the accounts, which is typically they'll outsource the brick and mortar account. And then they will just manage their own personal one.
I personally don't think that a brick and mortar facility really needs to have a bump in account. Like it's nice to have a presence for sure. But I don't think you have to be like posting and doing the most.
Or if you are going to do that, then fucking go all in on it. I'm thinking about a, um, a, uh, what is it called? A shop, a mechanic shop that I follow. And they got a bumping, super bumping account, but they're like doing, I think they like monetize things online.
Like they'd just be doing like YouTube videos and long things like that. And they also have their shop, but it feels like I wouldn't, I'd be hard pressed to be like, Oh, and they're getting a ton of business from having the online component. Maybe I think about even like the prehab guys and they have their in-person facility.
And they did a talk once at APCA at CSM. And I'm saying this because we had, we did the talk together. Uh, and Craig was like, Oh, actually it might've been, um, I'm like, I'm totally blanking on his name right now.
I feel terrible. Um, but one of the prehab guys, he made it a point to say like, Hey, I think it was Craig actually though that said it, but he was just like, don't think that like our practice is booming because we have a million followers on Instagram. Like they are two different things.
So I don't think that a brick and mortar needs to be having some, some big booming, some big booming, um, uh, social media presence. I think the caveat might be like some kind of food place that you then become like Instagram famous. But even then it's kind of like, you might, that could be annoying.
Um, but all that to say, if you insist upon having both the personal brand and the brick and mortar account, this works really well if you can outsource the brick and mortar account. Right. Uh, but if we zoom out, I know I was talking a lot there cause I have, I do have thoughts clearly.
If we zoom out and we sum it up, the answer to the question, should you start another account is what is your goal and what is your capacity? All right. At the end of the day, you're going to do what you're going to do. But clearly there are certain things that receive more of my blessings.
Nothing that matters, but there's certain things that receive more of my blessings than others. Um, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter because it's your life. I think that if your expectations are managed accordingly, it's not a bad idea to start a second account.
All right. I have an account for Rupert. I haven't touched in a zillion years, which is fine cause I don't, I don't care.
I just want to have that account for him. Uh, I have an account for prompting curiosity, my other podcast, and I just posted the stories there on Thursdays and I'm actually really fine with that. All right.
I like having it just in case. And I like using it for those Thursday, Thursday stories. Um, it's not going to grow and I know that, but I'm fine, fine having it worth noting.
All right. Starting an account just to secure the handle is totally worth it. All right.
I'd be buying domains all the time. I'm like, I might use that one day I'm going to buy it up. So it's fine to just go and take that Instagram handle as well.
But the main reason that I wanted to make this episode was because I know that there are people in my audience who are feeling this weirdness around Instagram and they're wanting to try, start something new, something different. And I want to give all of you all the permission that you don't need to do so. All right.
Me being me, I also want to future pace you because that's how I live my life. And that's how my brain works, right? Attention in my humble opinion is like cold peanut butter on white bread. Like it doesn't spread well.
It literally don't care what happens to it or start the new account and give yourself permission to go all in on it. All right. I'm going to give a quick plug for a solution that I have, which is round two of crew 52.
All right. For those of you that don't know, crew 52 is my year long accountability program, right? I will hold you accountable to whatever content creation it is that you're looking to lean into. Many folks in this current round are using it for social media, but we've also got folks tracking art projects and other platforms, TikTok, YouTube.
We got folks focusing on blogging, newsletters, website updates, working out, and my personal fave, doing something scary each month. I fucking love that. All right.
So if any of that sounds interesting, I know that there's a lot more information, a lot more questions that you may have, go check out the information page. And then on that, you can add your name to the interest list. I am unsure when I will start round two because I'm having such a blast with round one.
And also I just want to give my attention to all the folks in round one. But I'm thinking, right, it was August. What am I saying? It's October now.
I'm thinking that January one start, you know, new year, new me. It could be good. There's a time when folks like to start the new things.
And I will hold your ass accountable. That is something I'm very, very good at. It comes very naturally and I really enjoy it.
So we will put that information page link in the show notes. Thank you, Courtney. Thank you, Jojo.
If you have questions, you can also just hit me up, shoot me a DM, text me, 310-737-2345. This is like one of the most awesome projects that I put together and programs that I put together. So I'd love to talk to you about if you have questions, but that is all that I have for today.
That's all I got as it relates to starting that account. You're going to do what you're going to do. I've laid out my thoughts around it.
So Godspeed. As always, endlessly, endlessly, one more time, endlessly appreciative for every single one of you. Until next time, friends, Maestro out.
