DM #86: @portal.ido dropped this nice little gem yesterday, and I’m certain it’s a sentiment that will resonate with just about all of you fine folks out there in social media land.
While often times it’s athletes who most loudly echo this sentiment following injury during their subsequent identity crisis, you don’t have to consider yourself an ‘athlete’ to understand what Ido meant with that comment. When we can’t do what we want to do, it sucks, big time. We take movement for granted and don’t appreciate it until it’s gone.
With the growing popularity of functional training and primal movements, people’s eyes are being opened to just how they are SUPPOSED to be able to move, and their perhaps current pitiful movement state. However, there still remains a large proportion of folks for which Ido’s statement holds true. Chances are, if you’re reading this, you likely don’t fall into that camp. However, there is a distinction between simply being able to move, and being able to move freely.
Ok, so you can do the basics; You can sit, stand, walk, lie down. But can you get down on the floor and play with your kids? Can you reach behind you to put on your seatbelt? Can you move in any and all of the ways that you not only need to be able to move, but that you want to move? Expose yourself to more forms of exercise, of play, of movement, and you may discover that you’re not as ‘free’ as you thought. I can guarantee one thing, it’s gonna piss you off. Lucky for you, you can work on that movement. You don’t have to be an athlete to want to move better, and you don’t need to have backflips on your to-do list in order to work on your movement. EVERYONE can benefit.

Improve your movement, improve your quality of life. It’s that simple.
