DM #57: Without getting too deep into pain science, when something hurts, the pain that we experience is not simply a result of tissue damage and a localized problem. The central nervous system has a whole lot to do with how we experience pain, and going hand in hand with that are our thoughts and beliefs about that pain.
Don’t believe me? Let’s use a quick example. Stub your toe while running through your house, and it feels like death. Stub that same toe while running out of your house because it’s on fire, and suddenly that toe doesn’t hurt so much…if at all.
Dropped this DM today just to remind folks that how we view our pain will directly affect how we manage our pain. Obsess over it, blame your body for letting you down, feel like it is something that you will never overcome, and there’s a good chance that you’ll be dealing with that pain for a looooong time.
There are a whole bunch of things that go into managing pain; just wanted to remind you that your feelings are one of them.
