DM #49: A message to everyone out there who reads my DMs, realizes that it applies directly to them, but then asks “what now?” We don't chase pain, we don't look to simply put a bandaid on the problem, we don't just address symptoms and forget about finding the cause.
Movement is medicine, and as such, it's one of the most powerful tools we have when it comes to managing pain and restoring functionality.
So then what's the beginning? Watch a baby and you'll have your answer. To restore movement, you must consider neurodevelopmental sequencing. Don't try to run before you walk, don't try to plank before you roll.
Start at the beginning and build a strong foundation. How is your breathing? Sucks? Well then you'd better make sure you're addressing that. How are your rolling patterns? Suck? Well then put that next on the list. I don't care if it's your knee, your shoulder, or your back that hurts. It's all connected. Go ahead and do whatever you want to manage the pain/swelling locally, but if you want to “fix” things, you gotta look and work globally.
It may be tempting to skip steps, but movement never lies, and you can't hide from crappy movement patterns. Faulty foundational patterns will ALWAYS get their 15 minutes of fame, be it as pain, injury, or an inability to perform some higher level movement.
I know you're gonna ask, so here it is in advance: One of the best resources for understanding this progression is the 4×4 matrix by Gray Cook and Mike Boyle. Gray's book Movement goes into it nicely. One of the best books for understanding and visualizing the interconnected nature of the body is Anatomy Trains by Tom Myers. So use the interwebs, buy the books, do whatever you gotta do to get your learn on. Whatever you do, start at the beginning and go from there ?
