DM #40: Verbal acuity, my friends!!! All too often I hear the terms strength and motor control used interchangeably, and that's just plain wrong! Strength speaks to our ability to generate force, while motor control speaks to our ability to sequence and coordinate muscular contractions and movement.
The person with a motor control dysfunction who tries to treat their back pain with strengthening exercises will continue to have back pain despite gainz and a 6 pack pack that would make Arnold jealous. You can have all the strength in the world, but if those huge muscles aren't firing when they're supposed to, and in the sequence that they need to (motor control), it won't matter.
Yes, there is some overlap between the two terms, but it is imperative that we realize that they absolutely don't mean the same thing.
Setting the stage here for Part 3 of Why You Winking So early, where I discuss the role of stability/motor control dysfunctions and the butt wink.
