DM #22: Ever wonder why all that mobility work you’ve been doing hasn’t been sticking? Well, if you’re doing a crap ton of mobilizations and then walking away, you’ve just typed an entire term paper and forgot to hit Save.
In the absence of direct trauma or prolonged immobilization, joints don’t just lock up for no reason. It’s a whole lot easier for things to get ‘tight’ and in doing so impart stability to your body as opposed to you actually working and exercising creating actual stability.
Mobility has become quite the hot ticket item these days, which is good in the grand scheme, however, we must not forget about its counterpart, stability. Gaining more mobility is easy. Band, balls, rollers, super-friends, voodoo bands, pick your poison. It’s keeping that mobility that is the hard part. And no, the answer isn’t to just do more mobility. Figure out why you lost that mobility in the first place, and then go from there.

Gray Cook and Mike Boyle's joint-by-joint approach is a fantastic way to understand this concept and provides you with some nice guidance as to where those areas of stability loss may be. How do we stabilize? Taping, corrective exercises, and activation at end range to name a few. So what’s the recommended game plan? Assess, mobilize, stabilize, moooooooove.
