DM #4: As Karel Lewit said, ‘If you don't own breathing, you don't own movement.' Breathing is the most fundamental movement pattern that we have, and as such, all subsequent movements are built from this foundation.
One of the primary compensations that you will see when a person does not own a movement is holding their breath. Now, depending on the demands of the task, breath holding, or a Valsalva maneuver maybe warranted so as to promote increased intra-abdominal pressure and help protect the low back. Deadlifing 500 lbs? Ok, perhaps you'll hold your breath. Bending down to touch your toes? If you're holding your breath, we got a problem.
Breath holding is a strategy that is utilized to impart stability to the system and allow us to perform the desired movement. In the presence of movement dysfunction we utilize any compensatory strategy that we can to allow us to perform the task. Enter: breath holding.

So what am I trying to say? Determine the demands of the task, and whether a high threshold or low threshold strategy is warranted (more on this in a future post. If you don't know those terms, go look 'em up! ?) Then observe the breathing pattern and make sure that it fits.

Own breathing, start to own movement.
