DM #537: But you know what is the devil? Trying to force a square peg into a round hole. Let that sink in for a second…?.

Heel striking, in and of itself, is not bad. Pronation, in and of itself is not bad. In fact, it MUST occur otherwise you gonna have one unhappy foot and who knows what else. The flip side, if you're having pain, and you're heel striking all over the place when you run, and/or you have crazy amounts of UNCONTROLLED pronation…well then those are some things we should look at.

Go watch a marathon. Especially the finish. Check out the stride of the folks finishing first. Even those who WIN. Bay gosh, ya just might (aka definitely will) see heel striking. I ain't coaching those people out of it. Come to me with knee/foot/back/eye/whatever pain while running, then yes, I might look to clean up your stride. BUT, not by yelling at you to stop heel striking. Increase that cadence by 5-10% and a whole lotta magic happens. Well, physics actually. Faster cadence means a shorter stride which means you start landing with those feet a bit more underneath you instead of way out front. Science ftw.

What about pronation? ??‍♂️ Ya gotta have it. If you didn't your foot would blow up (well maybe not blow up, but you'd have problems) from trying to absorb the impact of walking, running, jumping, etc. It's whether or not it's CONTROLLED (aka how fast, how much, and when it's happening) that matters. And no, the answer isn't to throw the person into a Brooks Beast with 5 orthotics ?. Would you wear a back brace forever because your core was weak? (Correct answer: no). What should you do? Find a good clinician, get assessed, get moving, get better. The end.
