DM #616: A nice little follow up to last night’s DM, with a direct quote from the dope woman who inspired that DM.

Technology is advancing. Science is advancing. Our understanding of complex issues like pain is advancing. We, as providers, are on the front-lines of receiving and digesting all of this new stuff…our patients aren’t.

What does this mean? That while all that new stuff is awesome, at the end of the day, we are likely not treating people who have been privy to that information. Like DM #412 (also by Anita) says: Meet the patient where they are. Translation: if your patients aren’t fluent in science speak, don’t speak to them in science and expect them to get better.

This is basically yet another attempt from me to keep the pendulum from swinging too far one way or the other. What am I looking at this time in particular? Pain science. My boy @simplestrengthphysio had a great discussion about this the other night. Pain science is great. The progress we’re making in terms of understanding and explaining things is remarkable. But, some of our patients aren’t quite there yet, and as such, it’s up to us as clinicians to determine where they are in fact at, meet them there, and then “push a little.”

The primary goal of treatment cannot be to dispel myths and rid patient’s brains of every single misconception that they might have. Our primary goal is to get them to feel better, and in the process, drop a little knowledge. Not the other way around.
