DM #474: Belly breathing ain't just about pushing your belly out.

Had the chance to have dinner with my dude @aswansonpt last night and we chatted about ALL the things, including one of my favorite things, breathing. Half a hemp beer later and we're agreeing that the pendulum has swung too far, and folks have breathing bellies that look a whole lot like beer bellies ?.

When you're working on breathing you gotta be active. It's not about just pushing your belly out without any kind of control. When we work on any other movement pattern we champion being active and owning the entirety of that pattern; breathing should be no different.

Your diaphragm is the primary muscle of breathing, and as such, a more ideal breathing pattern is one in which inhalation occurs via contraction and descent of the diaphragm with concurrent expansion of the rib cage. That belly moving outward is really just a byproduct of the diaphragm descending..aka, it shouldn't be all you're focusing on when you're breathing.

Wanna learn more about breathing? Come drink, dance, hang out, and learn with me and @joelavapt during @rocktape's RockStock on Sept 22-23. In the meantime, let's be active and get that rib cage moving.
