DM #615: Two sides to that double-edged sword ⚔️.

On the one hand, as a provider, it can be extremely annoying when patients come in demanding a diagnosis, or when docs send prescriptions with the absolute incorrect diagnosis, being wielded by a now absolutely nocebo-fied patient. Yes. That’s a word ??‍♂️.

However, on the other hand, providing a diagnosis gives a name to what that patient is feeling, and that, for many, can be a HUGE beacon of safety. And at the end of the day, safety is the number one thing the nervous system craves. Make it feel safe and suddenly it starts letting you do a whole lot more.

So, while we know that a diagnosis is nothing more than a name, in the grand scheme, that name can play an important role in helping move your patient forward. BUT, it’s important that we educate patients as to the fact that a diagnosis by no means tells us exactly how to treat the patient or the specific cause of that person’s issues.

Just playing a bit of devil’s advocate with myself tonight. A diagnosis absolutely won’t make tissues heal faster, but it can help create a a sense of safety which then gets that person started down the road to healing. We’re treating humans, never forget that. —
