MOTM #264: State of the Union: Event Planning and Building Business Longevity with Lauren Caselli

Monday, December 14th, 2020

This week is our second-to-last State of the Union episode, so I wanted to talk with someone in a very different line of work than my usual guests. Lauren Caselli (we actually went to undergrad together, Hoya Saxa!) works in the events industry, and as you might have guessed guess, her business got hit HARD and forced her to make some big changes.

Lauren did not pivot. Lauren did not go virtual. Lauren did what something quite different than every guest I’ve brought on thus far during the series: She paused.

In this episode Lauren explains why she paused, what that pause looked like, and all that she learned during that time.

Lauren may be in a different industry than many of us, but honestly, you don’t have to listen around the edges to see the similarities. If you’re in the service industry in any way, shape, or form, this episode is for you.

Real talk, as a business owner, you’re going to have good years and bad years. Perhaps you did GREAT this year. That awesome. But as we all know, change is the only constant. What’s important is building a strong enough foundation to get yourself through the bad times so you can keep creating and keep showing up for your people.

Tune in and let Lauren help you out.

In This Episode You'll Hear:

  • Who Lauren is and what she does
  • Forecasting the future of the events industry
  • The definition and create of community
  • The value in losing money on an event
  • Taking a pause
  • Short-term vs. Long-term money
  • “Thinking out loud” daily
  • Sharpening your saw
  • What does Lauren’s business look like now?
  • Ethical business ownership
  • You have to be excellent at your craft, but also at business
