Full Transcript: MOTM #597: Is Your Content Too Serious?

[Transcript starts at 1:10]

Hello, hello, hello, my podcast people. And for joining me for yet another episode of my favorite podcast. If you are joining me when it drops, it is Monday, July 15th. We are talking today about whether or not your content is too serious. Maybe you've asked yourself this question. Maybe you haven't, and you're just like hearing me talk either way.

That is the topic for today. First as per always do a little life updates, business updates, and then we'll hop right on into it. So business updates, early bird pricing for Bossup 2024 ends at the end of this month, so that'll be July 31st, whatever day that is, uh, for those of you who don't know, Bossup is a company.

Let's just say it the live event of the year for female online business owners and female online business owners, female online business. That's what I meant to say. Uh, it's October 10th and 11th down in, or it's not say down in, but it's here where I live in sunny Redondo beach, Southern California, hosting it with me and Jill Fit, uh, hosting it with me.

I am hosting it with Jill Fit, uh, and we're going to be getting tactical and practical and teaching you. How to actually do online business in a way that feels good for you. This is not just rah rah, this is actually tangible, tactical, actionable things that we'll be teaching you. And we are bringing in three guest speakers, Dr.

Jennifer Hutton, she's J POP, uh, Rachel Strickland and Dr. Uchenna Osai, and we're going to be teaching you, they are going to be teaching you what it takes to actually become the type of person who does online business differently. That is at the crux, the heart of this, uh, Summit, uh, we'll call it this, this, um, of BossUp is just doing business differently, which in my, it's my hope that just becomes the default for doing online business, which is as a goddamn human, you know, that has, that is ethical, uh, that has integrity, um, that is willing to say what they believe in.

You know, speak up for what they believe in. And so we're going to talk about the tactical side of it. Jill and I will talk about that and we're going to bring in people. We're bringing in people to teach you what it actually takes to become a person, the type of person that does that. And to lean into being the type of person that does that.

So early bird pricing that ends, uh, at the end of this month and next week's episode, next Monday's episode, uh, episode 599, we're almost at 600. Um, but that's going to be a crossover episode with Jill, um, crossover because it's going to be on her podcast, FitbizU, as well. And we're going to be talking about all things Boss Up, so if you're wondering or you're just like listening to us, um, I know that a good number of you out there, like, you've been in our ecosystems and you enjoy when we have those, those double, I don't know, dual episodes.

So, we'll do another one next Monday. Uh, that's the only business that I have. Update because right now it's summer time, it's the summer slowdown and we straight up chillin fam, okay? Uh, life updates, heading to the east coast this week, well the week that this drops I'll be heading to the east coast with Lex.

Uh, to see my family for Thanksgiving in July. I will report back on that but I think it's gonna be amazing. Probably hot, probably mosquitoes, but probably amazing. Um, so there's that. Uh, what else? We had the reverse co ed fours tournament. Okay. Um, not very good. We did make it to semis, uh, semifinals, but like, I just don't like fours folks.

If you know anything about volleyball, like beach volleyball is two against two, this tournament is four against four. It's a completely different game. It's a power game. It's, can you hit hard spoiler? I can't really hit that hard. Um, I'm working on it, learning it. Uh, but that's not my, my, it's not my forte.

I'm a very quick player. I'm a crafty player. I'm more of a shooter. And that is really not what boards is about. So happy that we did it because our costumes were great. We were notorious DIG came out great. Um, I don't know if we'll do it again, but definitely signed up. As I said in the previous episode to, um, support my coach, Stephen, like we've, he'd been talking about, you know, he always does this hooky tournament and he was like, how can we don't do it?

And I was like, cause I kind of hate it. And also I hate the men's net. And he's like, okay, cool. Reverse co ed and then it's women's. And then the net is lower, but I was like, uh, whatever. So I did it. Don't didn't really love it. Don't really have any desire to do it again, but there's the update on that.

Okay, uh, my neck it's doing great If you're watching this you can see it's doing great Karen always hooks it up. My elbow is still intermittently fucked up And I'm just like annoyed about that, but I am doing things for it. I am back on that red light life functionally. Like it's fine. It's just like, it bothers me sometimes.

It's like, but I am like, my weights are going back up to where they were. Um, I can play volleyball. I don't have any pain or issues with that, but there's a little bit tight, but it's just annoying. Um, it definitely started in my neck, which then led to like an orthopedic, localized orthopedic injury, like my neck.

I get next up when I dive that's gonna, you know, affect how tricep is firing that definitely affected the elbow itself And then I just had very bad pain suddenly and I was like, what the fuck? uh, so Yeah, that's there. I'm treating it. Karen and I are working on it. It's getting better. It's just like go away already Um, i'm back on that red light life.

I should have Stayed on. I didn't, I didn't know why I stopped. I think I thought it was going to go away because it like feels pretty good in between and then I'm like, oh no, it's still there. Um, so I'm back in that red light life. Um, I did an episode. Did I do an episode? I did a, actually a free webinar with, with, um, Alison.

She's the owner, the co founder of Fringe. So we will link that in the show notes. It's free. So if you want to learn about red light, things like that, It is free. We'll link that in the show, in the show notes. Um, thank you, Courtney. And also I will drop my affiliate link for fringe. Um, they don't have any more discounts right now, but if you want to give me some money because you use the affiliate link, that's amazing.

Uh, so if you're in the, in the market for a red light, I really do swear by it. Like that shit helps. Uh, so. Yeah, there's that we will link all that in the show notes. Thank you, Courtney. Okay, let's get into the episode We are like seven minutes here. Let's like let's do this thing. So today's topic is your content too serious?

Honestly, I don't know it's always gonna be up to you to decide this But if you've wondered this if you're especially right now during the summertime or maybe you're like I just like want to like do something a little bit more light hearted. Yeah, let's lean into that All right, so if you're wondering this That's, that's what we're talking about in this episode.

What follows is the food for thought and my soft suggestions. Okay. So what prompted this episode was I was scrolling the gram, as per always, I spend a lot of time online. I really love it. Uh, and I saw a post on the, the account embracing black culture. Great account that and black Twitter threads, two phenomenal accounts.

So funny. And so in the post, it was like a tweet and it was a guy talking about, there was a video that was shared and it was Simone Biles talking with Cezza and Cezza was showing off Cezza. If you don't know, that's the S the artist musician SZA. Um, but she was showing off her gymnastics skills and she's just like hanging out, shooting the shit with Simone Biles and the thread to this, the man wrote.

I'm smiling so damn hard. We really just need some more wholesome black content, bro. I'm so sick of these think p think pieces and discourse. Can I just smile? Like, what the fuck? He wrote, what, WTF? And I was like, this is great! Yes! Everything about this is great. My definitely something to be said about this.

Like I said a little bit before, because it's summertime and everyone's brain, or at least here in the Northern Hemisphere, right? It's summertime, and everyone's brains are in summer mode. It's just like, chill the fuck out. I want to like, just relax a little bit. Oh, hit my fan over there. So, As it relates to business, I think there's some things to consider, you know, as we talk about how serious your content is and should you switch it up.

Understand that people are on social media for three reasons. To be entertained, inspired, and educated. In that order. But businesses are built on solutions to problems. So to that end, entertainment is a very difficult thing to build a business around. All right. People will watch things that are entertaining.

People will double tap things that are entertaining, right? Because it's escapism. They might double tap. Sometimes they just watch it and scroll on. Right. But they're definitely not as likely to pay you in money. So. I'm always cautious with that when people just want to like, you know, they look at these other accounts that are like, you know, doing things that are traditionally entertaining.

So like funny and wanting to build a following behind that. And I'm like, you may get followers, you may get likes, but I don't know if you're going to get money. And I'm here to help you build a profitable business. So I do think. That the answer is what we call infotainment or edutainment. So it's combining those two things, but understanding that entertainment is absolutely subjective.

It doesn't have to be funny, right? If you were to ask everybody, the group of 10 people, like what type of movies do you like? What type of movies do you find it entertaining? They'd all say different things. Some might say document. I can't, I always put the emphasis on the weirdest level documentaries. I don't know why I struggle with that.

They may say that they like rom com. They may say that they like action films, right? Entertainment is. Subjective. I think the big takeaway here is that I want you to teach everything you know and be a whole ass human while doing it, right? Being a whole ass human meaning you're bringing the perhaps not so serious side, the not so purely educational side to the conversation.

Your social media. This is again, why I love Instagram because there's so many different parts of the platform and it's easy to break things up and kind of categorize things and partition things if that's easier for your brain, right? So stories, I fucking love them. I think they're the most important part of the platform.

Share everything, literally share everything. You can teach, right? You can do anything you want in there, but then you can also like just share memes, share things that you find funny, share your life, share your day. Share your kids if you want. Doesn't matter. And then in the post, you can use that to teach.

Teach everything you know. Solve problems. Businesses are built on solutions to problems. Look to establish yourself as the expert. Look to establish yourself as that credible resource. That credible, approachable resource. I will absolutely push people more towards teaching in their feeds. All right, as opposed to kind of sharing everything in their feeds, because when you're just starting out and you're looking to build this habit of posting, I don't want you to build this habit of posting and it turns into a personal page, right, where it's just pictures of your kids.

You're going to really struggle to build a business that way, because again, businesses are built on solutions to problems and pictures of your kids aren't solving any problems. All right, so once you've built the habit, of posting consistently, then go ahead, by all means, let's bring, you know, bring some of your life into your feed.

That's fine, right? Because, don't forget, I suggest, and really, you know, strongly suggest, posting everyday. And if you're posting everyday, that's a whole lot of real estate. So, yeah, go ahead and teach a bunch, and one of those posts, every now and again, is just like, sharing your joy, and sharing your life. I think there's definitely room for that, especially, you know, I think if you were to listen to older podcast episodes of mine, you might be able to find somewhere I was just like, you know, keep it fully, I, I'm sorry if that sounded weird in the microphone.

I don't know. I don't have headphones on so I can't, but that F sounded like it had a lot of force behind it. Uh, but you might be able to find an episode where I was like, you know, keep it fully educational in your, in your feed. Um, but. The times have changed, right? And people are ready for new things. You know, COVID changed a lot of things for people.

They really want more of the human side of the business. They want to connect with the person behind the business. Uh, so, you know, there's something to be said about that and leaning into that. I think it's a great thing, right? It's a fucking phenomenal thing. So yes, you got to post every day. It's a lot of real estate, which means that you can throw in your family.

You can throw in your life. You can throw in your joy every now and again, because you have a lot of posts that you can. But even before you're ready to do that, you know, if you haven't necessarily like fully established or fully built that habit, then use stories, man. Stories is the best way to just really put the, the person in, in personal brand.

So I think the big message here or the big message that I really wanted to get across is just throwing away professionalism, right? Throw that shit, that concept, just take it and fucking throw it out there. In the trash, because I think that is actually at the heart of content being too serious, right?

And in this case, I am speaking for folks who show up on Instagram in a way that isn't them. And they're just like, I feel like this is too serious. Then you know that this is too serious. It's not you. If you are a serious ass person and you're just like, this is how I am, then fucking ignore this whole podcast episode.

You're probably not even listening to this podcast episode. But for the rest of you that may be questioning this, like, it feels too serious. Is it too serious? It probably is. Take it down a notch. Just be you. My guess is that you're trying to be a certain way, maybe inadvertently or unintentionally. I mean, there's nothing ill intent or anything behind it, but it's just like I know that easier said than done, uh, especially when we're teaching things.

And I think you've watched me go through this with my own content where I didn't even have outlines before for this because I wasn't doing video and then I needed to make the outline so that I didn't want to have to stop the video because it's really fucking annoying. Uh, so, you know, I started doing outlines and I started teaching a ton and being like, very like, and I'm still fine with that.

But then, you know, there came a time when I was like, I want to make sure that I bring my own content. Back just like my life updates and put that into the episode. It's not just like teach, teach, teach. It feels too serious. Side note. I had someone who watched a YouTube episode and they commented. We had a really good, you know, good back and forth, but they were just like, you spent seven minutes pitching something before you got into the message of the episode about why, you know, you don't like being busy.

And I was like, because it's a podcast episode. This is not a YouTube video, but like they didn't listen to the beginning of it. So I could take that and be like, Oh no, I'm going to change this. I'm like, no man, like this is my fucking podcast. I'm gonna do what I want. And it's very important to me that there is this, this like levity, this.

Human side and just, it's not so fucking serious, right? So, I'm gonna leave you with a quote from my guy Tom Boyd. I gotta bring him on the podcast, probably maybe when the fall comes back around. Um, but I love this guy. I was on his podcast, just, he's a, he's a brilliant, brilliant creator. Um, but his account is Bonus Footage on Instagram.

We'll link that, thank you Courtney. Um, but his, the quote that he said was, We were having a conversation in the DMs and, uh, he wrote, To me, my favorite creators are the hook. And I was like that, right. Cause he had done a video and then he put it up there and he was like, Hey, looking for feedback on this hook.

And I, you know, we went back and forth and I was just like, I think that people spend too little, too much time trying to focus on the hook and things like that. I'm like, just like. Talk, be good. Like be interesting with people, let people just get to love you. Cause I I'm a watch if it's someone that I know they put out good stuff, I don't need that first thing to be really like, you know, sharp and like really this attention grabbing, I get it as it relates to kind of growth, things like that.

There's some value in that. There's some strategy there, but in general, I'm just like, let's put out a shit ton of good content. And he was like, yo, I agree. And then when he said my favorite creators are the hook. And I was like, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. So if you think you're wondering, is your content too serious?

So my soft suggestion, my response to you, let people see you, let them see all of you. Use your voice. Speak how you speak. If you curse, fucking curse, share your joy, laugh, share your life. All right. Yes. While businesses are built on solutions to problems, and I do want you to teach everything that you know, you don't have to be teaching all right.

That is it for today. I'm going to wrap it up because it's summertime. I want to go do something else. Don't forget, early bird pricing for Boss Up ends in about two weeks on, what is that, July 31st. Uh, next Monday, we got a guest episode with Jill. Listen to that, and we would both love to hang out with you in October.

As always, endlessly appreciative for every single one of you. Until next time, friends, Maestro out.
