Full Transcript: MOTM #684: My Exact Podcasting Process

Hello, hello, hello. My podcast people and thank you for joining me for your day, another episode of my favorite Online business podcast. If you are listening, tuning in watching on the day that it drops. It is Monday, September 29th. Welcome to the final week of September, which isn't even a full week. So basically welcome to October.

Today I am sharing with y'all my. Full podcasting process. But first, quick life update, quick biz update, and then we'll hop into the, uh, full topic. So, full main topic. So life update. Uh, number one, fuck Donald Trump. I gotta make sure to say that every episode, 'cause I feel it in my fucking heart. Say my soul in my bones.

So if you haven't heard it today, you're hearing it from me, fuck Donald Trump. Fuck the whole administration. Okay, life update number two. I drove to Arizona last Friday. Uh, I think I mentioned this in the last week's episode. I'm not sure. Um, but if you follow my Instagram stories, thank you. And maybe you saw, um, I did it impromptu on September 24, excuse me, September 14th, I did an impromptu green screen story where I shared, um, the price of the pre-core stretch trainer machine.

If you are around my age, I'm 40, and you are in the PT world or the fitness world, there is a good chance that you have seen or heard of or used or perhaps loved this machine, very singular. In use case, it's really just stretches. The posterior, posterior chain, they have like eight exercises that they show.

It really just stretches your posterior chain, but I fucking love it. It fits me well. I love it. And every few years I think about that machine and I'm like, it'd be nice to have it. It's a decent sized footprint, but I'm like, it'd be nice to have it. And every time I think about it, I go online and I look up the price, and every time I'm like, what in the actual fuck?

Right? Spoiler. I shit you not, that thing is $1,200. 1200. It's $1,250. Like what in the actual fuck? So this time I decided I, you know, I had the urge. I went and looked at it and I decided I'm gonna just put a story up because why not? Like. I, I, I never shared in my stories, and sometimes it's fun to just be like anyone else.

Like this thing if you do, it's a million dollars. Um, but I, I put in my stories and a bunch of people wrote back and they were like, oh my God, I about the thing. I loved it. It's a thousand dollars. Are you fucking kidding me? And people were like, you know, look on Facebook marketplace and offering suggestions.

And I was like, yeah, you think I haven't looked for these things? Uh, and they have like, you know, knockoffs and I'm like, I want this one. If I wanted it. If I'm going to get it, I would want this one because I know that it fits right, it has the correct proportions, and it moves and does what I want. But the best dm, I guess I'm in my eye.

The best DM that I received was from SA Dr. Sarah Asurian out of Tempe, Tempe, Arizona. She slid into my DMS and goes, I'm pretty sure the clinic I work at has one in the closet. Let me ask and get back to you tomorrow morning. I shit you not. She got back to me the next day, which was, I think, I dunno, Monday, something like that.

Saturday. I dunno. Either way she, she got right back to me and she goes, it's yours. You have any trips to Arizona planned? And I was like, no. But I do now. But I do now. So I thought about the different options getting there. I actually went on chat BT. Um, so try and help me out with like one way rentals and see if I could find any and couldn't.

If you listen to chat. BT episode, uh, Chatt Curious, my other podcast, he listened to episode 10. I think it was 10. I talked about this. Um, but I talked to my friend Danielle, who lives in Arizona, and I decided to just make the drive. I was like, it makes the most sense. So I took Lexus's car. Uh, it gets way better mileage.

I, I have a Jeep, uh, Wrangler, so it is 11 miles per gallon. Uh, so took Lexus's Lexus has a Jeep, but she has a Jeep, uh, what is it? Compass? I don't fucking know. Uh, no, no, it's not, it's, I don't know what the heck it is. Oh no, she's a Cherokee. She has a Jeep Cherokee. Um, but it gets like three times the mileage that mine does.

So. Decided to make the trip in a single day. Um, I was like, all right, I'll do it a Friday. So I left at 6:00 AM got there at 1230. Um, met the staff, packed the, the machine up because it wouldn't fit. I like, take the top part off, took sour to lunch at a place called Electric Pickle, and then got on the road around three and I pulled into the driveway around 9:45 PM I the power of the fucking interwebs, right?

You just meet the best people. You can attract and meet the best people. And it really just meant so much to me. I kept telling her, I will probably continue to tell her to just, she like single-handedly restored my faith in humanity for the, at least the rest of the month. Just, she didn't have to do that.

We're not like best friends or anything like that. Um, we bring in the same like, you know, movement sphere and you don't forget to name like asurian, but like, we're not like besties or anything like that. And she just. Did that outta the goodness of her heart that really, it like got me right in the field.

So, you know, there are genuinely good people out there who want to help, uh, and who are kind, and I know you know this, um, and there's a good chance that if you're listening, watching in like you are that type of person as well. But with everything going on in the world, it, especially in the United States, everything going in the United States, lemme not bring other people into this, everything going in the United States.

Um, it's really nice to have those reminders. So, um. In that same vein, my brother from another mother, Dan, um, who I met basically through the interwebs as well, he sent me some surprise sneakers this week, just outta the blue. He sent me some I outta a box. Lexi was like, you have a box here. And I was like, I didn't order anything.

I, I didn't order nothing and there's no note or anything. And it was Mafi Maestro Green, uh, d Brooks, um, d books. Uh, lost my train of thought there, D books, sneakers. I'm just like, because I'm thinking about them and I'm like, dude, it's like, just like overwhelming. I was just like. His wife, Natalie. I'm very close with both of them.

And she texted me and she's like, Dan's not a gift guy. Like, that's a big deal. And I'm like, it is a big deal. Um, and it just exploded my heart and I'm so grateful for the people in my life. And I will say one thing, just, um, that I tend to do is when I need a pick me up, especially when I start the day and I'm like, I need my need this today.

I will wear the clothing. That my people have sent me or that like I have purchased that is swag from my people, right? Um, you know, I think Injector, J-Pop, um, my guy Jay, um, just literally anyone, anyone swag who I've purchased. My guy Joe, he sent me a Kendrick shirt. I wear that shit all the time. I depend, like I need, I need a good day.

I'm wearing the Kendrick shirt, right? And now I can add, you know, the Maestro five D books kicks from Brother Dan. So that shit does make a difference to me, um, wearing things that remind me of my people and, and keep me close to my people. So I'm gonna throw that out there for a little idea for you if you, you ever need to pick me up.

Um, so switching gears now into the, I feel like I should make a sound. Like if you're like that though, bad news, that's bad news. Uh, but switching gears. To biz updates. The wait list is officially open now for press publish. Press publish. If you don't know, it's my super small group coaching program that comes with a 100% guarantee that you will launch your podcast in eight weeks.

Yes, this is why I'm doing this episode, folks. Yes, of course. Uh, if you've been wanting to start a podcast, but you've been dragging your feet, this is the program for. I've talked about this program before. Um, this will be round two. I, when I launched round one, I wasn't sure if I'd have a, a second round.

Um. I did it kind of on a whim and decided to just see how it went and how it would go. And it went really, really fucking well. I got three people in it, all three people launched their podcast. I loved running it. It was really different than other things that I've run. Um, 'cause people end up with this very tangible like, you know, concrete thing, you have a podcast.

And I was like, this is really, really cool. And they know how to, they're doing it. It's not like I'm running it for them, like they. They did it, they did the cover art, the episodes, they know the tech, they, they are running their podcast and then all of them have at least eight episodes by this point. And it's just like, dude.

You have a podcast. Uh, so I loved it and I'm officially, I'm running it again. We will start the next cohort, which will start on October 21st. All the details are on the wait list information page. I limit it to eight spots. Um, because I'm all up in your business and I don't think I can handle more than that.

Like I'm really, it is really like I am in there with you helping me to think any tech questions you have, send me the episode. Let me listen to it. I'll make suggestions. I'll make, you know, um. We'll call them Loom video feedback. So you can be like, Hey, here's how I would change this. And like, here's the tech things.

Um, I'm in there with you and I, I couldn't handle more people than that. So, uh, eight people, the price is 9 97, so almost a thousand dollars. Um. For folks on the wait list, and I told, you know, I told you I'm all up in your business. Uh, I'm gonna hold your hand. Lots of accountability. So, no, the program doesn't cost one penny.

Uh, the calls are every Tuesday. I love Tuesdays for a call day every, every Tuesday at 2:00 PM for eight weeks in a row. The first call is October 21st, and each call lasts about an hour. Why join the wait list? Why get on the wait list at all? Because I honestly haven't decided how I wanna launch this thing.

And if I wanna do a big, you know, full public facing launch, um, because I'm looking for so few, so few people, I cap it at eight people. So it doesn't need to be this big, huge launch or anything like that. Um, so if you add your name to the interest list, it simply means you won't miss out. When I open registration, there is no obligation to join.

If you put your name on the list, um, it's just guarantee that you. Get the email that says it's open and you can't be like, I never knew. So, uh, if you've been dragging your feet about during a podcast, you've been wanting to start a podcast, but you just can't get your shit together, consider joining.

Right. Put your name on the, on the interest list, like you will have a podcast by Christmas. What a gift, right? I will hold your hand, I will hold you accountable. I will walk you through exactly what needs to be done. I will give you feedback. I will make sure that you get this shit launched. Alright. If anyone and everyone who joins, joins the actual program, you will have a podcast if you do the work.

Obviously you'll have a podcast launch before Christmas like. You will. Uh, so the, the link to join is in the show notes. Uh, join the link to join the wait list is in the show notes. Thank you, Courtney. Thank you, Jojo. Okay, so speaking of podcasts, let's make the switch this little segue and let's hop into today's main topic, which is my podcasting process.

Um, perhaps you're listening to this and you're like, weren't you just promoting the wait list for a different program? Yes. For my intensive, which is. Going to be starting the day after this episode drops, um, the final round, and now I'm promoting this. Yes. Because this is the beauty of having your own podcast, right?

You can talk about whatever the fuck you want. You can have commercials and try to make money, or, which is clearly my preference. You can. Advertise your own stuff, right? I will always use that, that route. So, um, this is just one reason that I'm such a fan of having a podcast, is that you get to do your things the way that you wanna do them.

You all know I'm all about that, that agency agency button there. So I have two podcasts. This one, my show on the mic and my new baby Chachi pt. Curious. The process that I do for both of them is largely the same with one major difference. Chachi pt, curious is audio only, and it's so much easier. I will die on the hill of this recommendation.

No video podcasts until you've recorded 100 audio only episodes. I know that people stay wanting to, you know, like prove me wrong, but that's fine. Like go burn yourself out. That's fine. That's on you. Uh, but 100 audio only episodes is about two years, and that gives you the reps such that adding video will not be that big of a lift.

It'll be a lift still for sure, but it won't, it'll be a smaller lift, um, when you're doing audio only. Not having to worry about, you know, the camera, the video, the lighting, how you look, the background, all these things. Is it in focus? Is it picking up? You have to match the audio, like it's a lot. And not even worrying about that makes it so much easier.

Uh, you know, honestly, real talk. Most folks who do video podcasts, um, they have shit video. They have shit, video quality, it drives me crazy and it's 'cause they want to start, you know, it's too much for them to do all the things. It's too much for them to worry about the video quality and understanding the tech behind that.

And then when are they gonna actually record and adding this into their schedule? 'cause it is a bit of a lift right? Then worrying about the audio quality and worrying about matching, all, doing all of these things. It's, it's a lot. So they're just like, okay, I'm gonna use like the shitty camera on my computer.

Do not use that, that camera fucking sucks. Like there are other things to be done. And so, so I'm like, just do audio only, right? One thing at a time. Um, but what, so what I'm gonna share today is my process for the chat GBT Curious podcast because I do the entire show myself. So I guess you should say there's two major differences between my show on the mic and chat.

GBT curious, my show on the mic, uh, is, is audio and video as you can see. And I have Courtney and Joe, which I'm gonna talk about, whereas with, um, Chacha, be Curious. I do it all my, all myself, and it is. Audio only, uh, for this podcast, right? For my show on the mic. Y'all know I have the ever amazing Courtney.

Uh, she adds the music, she uploads it, she does the show notes, she adds the links, all that shit. Um, and I got my guy jojo, who handles everything related to YouTube. I make the video, the full video that goes up there, you know, editing. I do. Any that needs to be done. I'll just do it. 'cause we're not doing any like major edits or anything like that.

We're not like cutting it down or anything like that's just like the video, splice it together, dust if sometimes I wanna change the lighting in it and the color grading a little bit, and then I will upload that to YouTube and then he handles everything else. All the thumbnails, the note, the show notes that are there, right?

Chat, g, pt, curious. I do myself largely because part of the goal with that podcast is to make things as meta as possible and use chat GBT as much as possible. Hence the name chat to be curious or tying into the name chat to be curious. Um, and I'll explain what this looks like for me. So chat to bet curious.

The recording day for that is Wednesday. I pick a day and that's how I, I've always, you know, batched my, my energy and my tasks. Um, whereas my from the mic I record on. Mondays. Um, the first thing that I do is I outline the entire episode the ideas, like for what the episode's gonna be like, the topic that comes from my head, um, what I've been reading, what people, what I think people may think is helpful, what's trending.

You could ask people, um, but they're just like, I, I have ideas for what I want to be talking about. Um, I also have like a running list of topics in a foldered in the My Notes app. So I outline the entire thing, and I can basically read directly from the outline without reading it verbatim, because I don't want to actually read verbatim because then it sounds robotic, right?

But it is an extremely comprehensive and detailed outline. I did not always do this when I first started Myr on the mic. I would just talk. Be riff and sometimes I had a few bullet points. Um, I would, and honestly like I have the gift gab, so I, I didn't really have to stop. I could just like do it and be done.

Um, when I first started video, this was, you know, four or five years into having a podcast, I started doing the extensive outline so that I could record the video straight through because it's annoying for me to stitch things together and I have to sync up the audio and the video move. And so it's just like, Hey, just write it out so that it's.

Perfect. And then you can just one take, right, one take Tina. Um, so I have carried that process forward and now I do extensive outlines for both podcasts. Um, as for how long it takes me to create the outline, it's a couple of hours, right? It is work. It's definitely not short. Um, and it just really depends on how well versed I am in the topic.

So for my show on the mic, it'll take me maybe like an hour to two hours for chat. Bt curious. Episode number two, which was the environmental episode, the, the impact, the environmental impact of, of chat. G Bt that took me about a week, right? Because I do all the research for it. Um, and then all the rest of the chat be curious episodes like after the first four, because the first four, I do a lot of research for them.

After the rest, they've, they've have all, you know, slimed down, TriMed down to like a few hours. Um, what I end up with. Um, like lengthwise of the outline is usually about four to six pages. I think this one right here that I'm, I'm talking from is like six pages, single spaced. Um, and I know that I can get through that in about a half an hour.

Um, I, I can tell like the time of how long it is based on how much I write, um, but everything is written on there. I don't spray from it. I don't go off script of it. I, I don't just riff on things. It's like, it's all right there. I include the links in, in the, in the outline when I can. Um. Like I said, the thing isn't in depth.

It's very, very in depth. Um, I make sure, especially to include the links, um, for chat Gt Curious because I have, um, chat GPT pulled them for me and you'll, you'll see what I, what I mean in, in a few minutes. Um, but this is very helpful. You know, it's helpful for delivery to have everything written out, but it is very helpful for the additional steps of the kind of post-production process.

Right? Um, it's kind of like the, the Abraham Lincoln quote, if I had six hours to chop a tree down, I'd spend the first five sharpening the ax. Like I'm getting everything ready so I can just deliver, boom. So few hours to do the, um, outline and then, then I record. That usually takes me 30 minutes or less, right?

It's one take straight through. Always, uh, I use GarageBand to record the microphone that you guys see here, um, or that you can hear that I'm using is a sure MV seven. Um, when I'm done, and again, this is for. Chacha be curious. I add the outro music. Um, no, I don't go back and listen to the episode. What's done is done, what's said is said.

I can see that it's recording. I have, I have two screens up over there. I can see the sound waves. Um, and I do a slight bit of volume work and that's, this is volume matching, so I always want the intro music and the intro talking to match the actual volume of the episode. And so I just always make sure it's the same.

And this is why I can tell that yes, there is audio on it. I can see it. Um, and that's all that kind of editing and post-production from that. Regard that I'm doing from there, I save it, I export it. Everything has multiple copies, right? Two is one, one is none. So I have one on the computer, one in Dropbox, and one in Drive.

Um, and then next up are the sho the shore notes, the show notes. Um, for the show notes, I generate a blurb, like little paragraph summary, a bulleted list of the main topics covered, and a list of links that I referenced in that episode. And for that, friends, I use chat, GBT.

So I have a project inside of chat, GBT. Uh. That is just for my chat tot Curious podcast. And if you go listen to the show, go listen. I think episode six will clue you in the most, um, as to like what a pro a project is. Um, but I have a project specific for chat to, for the podcast and I simply copy the entire outline and I paste it in and I type in and I say, podcast this, and it spits out.

The show notes, they're exactly what I just said. It will also give me title suggestions, um, but it gives me a summary. It gives me the bulleted list of the main topics that I covered, and it gives me the links, right? I just, from there, it's already formatted, so I just gonna go through and make any edits, cut anything out that I don't like, change any language that I'm like I don't really love, and then I can paste it right into the website, right?

It is so good, so fast. Um, again, for how I did that, go listen to my other podcast. Um. For my chat, GBT Curious Podcast, the host that I use is Casto. Um, I have a WordPress site and Casto plays pairs and plays really nicely with the podcasting plugin. It's called Seriously Simple Podcasting. And the theme that I have, which is Cadence, um, I built a new everything.

For any of you that are like actually techy and remember stuff, you may be like, I thought you used something else for my, I'm like, I do. I have another WordPress website for, um, my movement maestro. Brand and I use blueberry for, um, Maestro on the mic, but for. The new podcast, I just, I made a new everything and it made the most sense to go.

I did a lot of research for it too, uh, and it made the most sense to, to switch hosts and the, the plugin and everything. Um, so that's what I use for that podcast. Um, but I up, uh, from there I just upload the episode. I upload the show notes, and I schedule it, doing the show notes and uploading it. And scheduling it takes probably maybe 15 minutes tops.

It's so fast, right? We see the big bulk of the lift is writing the outline, recording the episode straight through, show notes, 15 minutes max, you know, show notes and upload and everything like that. 15 minute max. Um, it is the, the planning and the prep side, right? Um, I could be done. There and be like, okay, end of the podcasting process.

But for chat, GBT, curious, I wanted to have a written companion for that podcast. Just like I like having the YouTube side for this podcast. I wanted to have a written component, um, for that podcast. So I wanted a way for people to consume the content because I know to be teaching a lot. If they didn't wanna listen to a podcast.

I love hosting and having a podcast, but sometimes I just wanna read shit. I like read, I like listening to podcasts, but sometimes I just wanna read it. Um, and a lot of the AI stuff that I was into and, and learning from before I started my own podcast was, was. Blogs and so I was like, I would like to do this as well.

Um, so I created The Curious Companion, which is basically the podcast. It's a newsletter, um, but it's the podcast in written format. If you wanna join that, we will link that in the show notes. Thank you, Courtney. Thank you, Joe. Um. But that same long ass outline that I have, I have chat DPT create the newsletter.

So I ask, the, the prompt I use is companion. This, I have instructions that are tied to that prompt, just like I have instructions that are tied to the podcast to find this prompt. Um, and it generates the newsletter. For me, um, of note, I do have to do edits to it and I do it on a separate day 'cause it's like a, a decent amount of work.

Um, it's not just like, oh and print it out and it's great. Like I have to go through and reformat it and be like, do I like this? Do I wanna change this? Do I want it to kind of say more? 'cause it doesn't do the exact same thing every time. Um. Like, do I wanna kind of change this or do I wanna highlight actually more of this or less of this?

And I've learned that I actually like to do that on a different day than the podcasting day. So, like I said, chat to Beauty Curious Podcast Day is on Wednesday. I try to do, I end up doing the newsletter, the companion. Uh, curious Companion. Curious Companion. Oftentimes like the next Monday or Tuesday.

Usually the next Tuesday, um. I just kind of prefer being able to step away and then come back with a fresh brain. I think it helps me better focus on what I feel is important to deliver in the newsletter. So, like I said, record the episode on Wednesday. Usually the following Tuesday, I'll do that week's companion and I will schedule it to go out on Thursday.

Um, the PO the Curious Companion drops every Thursday. Mushroom the mic obviously drops every Monday. Um, I will also use that time to promote the companion. Be like, Hey, coming up tomorrow, coming up on Thursday, uh, it's gonna be this. Get on the newsletter. And I will also use that time to make the graphic that I will, sometimes I try to do, I gotta get better at this.

Um, also I'm post it on Thursday, Joe makes this graphic for, um, my show on the mic. And I, I gotta get better at posting that too. It's, it's a graphic, it's that's made for stories. Like I made the template for it, and all I'm gonna do is to switch out the, the title. Um, so yeah, ultimately, um. I think that I do want to take the companion that I have the curious companion for chat, GPT, curious and have it and have chat g PT help me make Instagram content.

But I just haven't been feeling it, so I haven't done it. But that would be the next step that I would add and that you as a listener might wanna add if you're looking to use my process and, and make it your own, right. Because the reality is if you want more people to listen to your show, you need to talk about it.

People have to know about it. You gotta let people know that it exists. You gotta let them know what you're actually talking about. Let them get a feel, taste for it. Um, so, you know, for my show on the mic, I was doing those clips, video clips for a while. Um, and I actually posted one not too long ago, maybe a month ago, um, maybe less, but.

Y'all know, I'm kind of also like, fuck Instagram, so not posting as much, but if I wanna go back to doing that, I can, because I have these videos, right? Because I'm recording this, you folks watching some YouTube. You see me and I cut this up and I turn it into, I can upload it to the script and then I can cut it into videos.

It's helpful because I have the, the, um, outline so I know where. Roughly in the video also is the things that I might wanna cut. Um, but for Chatt pt, curious, since it's an audio only podcast, I will probably have to turn it into something like a carousel, um, like a written carousel, because Audiograms, which is like a static image with like, you know, sound over the top, they just don't really do well on Instagram.

Most people are watching with the sound off. Like, it's just not like good, it's not good for the medium. So, um, I just gotta figure out what I wanna do with, that's another, another thing to add to the list, but that is my podcasting process. From start to finish. I've been doing this since 2018. Um, so it isn't overwhelming to me at all.

Um, it's quite the opposite, which is why I started press publish. Um, I think people starting and running a podcast or wanting to start a podcast think it's way more work than it needs to be. Like, yes, there is a lift. Don't get me wrong. There is some involved to it, but like you can absolutely do it. Know and be cognizant of both a time and a financial budget.

Absolutely. You can do the things yourself. I'm doing the things myself, right? For, for tragedy to be curious. You can make the episode shorter. You can talk about things in less than a teaching format and more in opinion, in an opinion way. You can talk about things that you know a lot about that don't require as much prep, right?

You get to choose when. Some of the advice on the mic episodes, like, take me no time at all to outline, right? You get to choose right? Podcasts in general in case you're like thinking about it and you're like, ah, maybe podcasts. They are very much well and alive. Like the space is not too saturated. It is a bit of the wild west.

It's not saturated though. No one keeps them going. People start 'em and they never fucking keep 'em going. So, you know, if you have something to say and you know, you can keep one going, I would absolutely encourage you to start one. If you want help, I promise you we can, and we'll get yours launched and rolling in less than six weeks.

Excuse me, less than eight. Technically it's six weeks, but less than eight weeks. Um, everything is done by six weeks and I have two weeks on the back end of the program. That's just to like keep you going. Um, but I will teach you the tech. I will hold you accountable. I will answer all of your questions. I will give you feedback and you will get your podcast launched, I promise.

So if this is interesting to you. Add your name with the interest list. We start on the 21st, and I would love to have you, I really, really would. I had a fucking blast last time and I'm, I'm excited to run it again. If you got any questions about the program, uh, press publish. That's the name of it. Don't forget you got any requests for episodes or if you just wanna say hello, shoot me a DM at the move of my show, shoot me a text, 3 1 0 7 3 7 2 3 4 5.

I would love to hear from you. Alright, that is all for today. Still, still under 30 minutes. See that, uh, as always, endlessly, endlessly, endlessly appreciative for every single one of you. Until next time, friends Maestro. Out.
