DM #46: Ever wonder why upper extremity patterned rolling is so much more difficult than lower extremity patterned rolling? Well, I'm guessing that you haven't, but one of the answers is because it requires proper neck function, and the sad reality is that most people are walking around pretty jacked-up necks.

A more practical example of this would be trying to turn and look behind you when you have a stiff neck. Yes, I realize the stiff neck is limiting you. But if you pay attention you'll notice that the rest of your body (despite the fact that there is no injury to it) doesn't move as freely or quickly. If the neck won't move, if the nervous system can't see where you're going, it's not going to readily grant you that movement. It always wants to feel safe.
Take-home message? When it comes to correcting dysfunctional movement patterns always clear the neck. Rolling is my jam. Crawling is dope. But if you can't move your neck, you ain't going anywhere.
