DM #131: Where my cyclists at?!? Did a quick post earlier today about knee valgus positioning while driving, and figured it warranted a follow up DM about the same topic.
Everyone goes crazy when they see someone squatting, or running, or jumping and their knees collapse in. But what about when you're sitting down riding a bike? If those knees start diving inward like a baby deer's, we've got a problem.
As mentioned earlier, the ability to get into that valgus position is not a bad thing in and of itself. We want our movement arsenal to be as large as possible. The problem comes when we enter this position in an uncontrolled fashion.
While you may be sitting when you ride a bike, you're still placing force through your knee, and that force needs to be controlled. Additionally, the high number of repetitions performed increases the demands placed on the joint. Poor positioning and/or control at any joint within the leg will compromise the integrity of the movement and set you up for injury.
Care about the quality of your movement irrespective of the activity or the position in which you perform that movement. Your body will thank you.
