DM #132: Been getting a lot of inquiries recently where people preface their title with the word “just”. ? What's going on, people?
The healthcare system is broken, and part of what perpetuates this problem is the subconscious, or perhaps not so subconscious, hierarchy that exists when it comes to professionals who deal with the human body. MD's are untouchable and at the top of the list, and then everyone else just kind of falls into place depending on the patient's particular beliefs and experiences. Who the hell made up this system?
Now, I don't really want someone who is untrained to be performing surgery on me, but in the same vein, I don't want surgery at all, so perhaps it would be best if I spoke with a different professional who could guide me in that direction.
We are all bringing something to the table, folks. Your experience as a trainer, and the knowledge gained from that experience, is different than mine as a physical therapist, and thus we both have things we can teach each other. Two people who go to the same school and graduate with the same degree will have different interpretations of things, different skill sets, and should be judged by the quality of their work, not simply by the letters after their name.
The knowledge that YOU possess is not suddenly depreciated by the fact that I went to school longer than you, or that somebody else has more degrees than you. We all have our specialties, and as such, we need to be confident in what we bring to the table. What one person may consider to be a side dish, may be a main course for someone else. It's all about perspective, and the patient or client who is standing in front of you.
I teach you, you teach me, we all teach each other. We are all in this together.
