DM #180: If you consider yourself to be a modern therapist, if you adopt the biopsychosocial model, if you preach about pain science, if you simply think of yourself as a good clinician, then this DM should come as no surprise.
Nearly every post that I do somehow references the fact that my overall goal with any treatment is to make the nervous system feel safe. To that end, if you're butchering someone's name, just how safe are they going to feel? Perhaps you're only slightly mispronouncing it, or maybe they just prefer to go by their middle name, or a nickname. Either way, it's unsettling on some level.
People are kind, and often times would rather cringe inside and have you call them by the wrong name than embarrass you by correcting you. Don't even let it go that far. From the jump, ask them how they pronounce her name and what they want to be called.
And for all my folks out there reading this who may be on the other side of things, don't be afraid to correct your provider, and also don't change your name up to make it easier for other people to say. If we can learn how to say Tchaikovsky, we can learn how to pronounce your name.
Every treatment is about making the nervous system feel safe. Let's start doing that from minute number one.
