DM #189: Ever wonder why Michael Jordan stuck his tongue out all the time? Perhaps it had a little something to do with this. Purely speculating here, but it’s fun to think about nonetheless.
Had a dope conversation with @tummytime4tonguetie the other day and she brought up an interesting point, relating tongue ties and core tension/structural instability, which, as so eloquently pointed out, occurs because of the fascial continuity between these structures as part of the deep front line.
I have recently taken to sticking my tongue out when setting up for olympic lifts, and while some may attribute it to a breathing technique used for bracing, I’m 99% certain it’s a compensatory pattern to help generate more tension throughout the deep front line and provide me with more stability.
Now, I’m by no means saying that if you see this in an athlete you should automatically seek to correct it and get rid of it. Far from that. Just trying to get you thinking and realizing that awesome continuity that exists within the human body. It’s up to you as a practitioner to determine if something is a meaningless impairment/compensation (yes, I do believe that there is such a thing), or something that needs to be addressed and corrected.
If you have no idea what I mean when I say deep front line, do yourself a favor and google it. Yup, you guessed it. That whole give a man a fish thing.
