DM #232: Monday’s don’t suck. Your shitty job does.
You ever sit down and do the math and figure out just how many hours a day you spend either at work, traveling to work, doing work from home, thinking about work, or planning for the next day of work? It’s probably a lot. Now, how many hours a day do you spend eating well, getting enough sleep, exercising, moving, being happy, playing with your kids…shall I continue? Bet you’re not really liking that math.
One of the things that made it so difficult to be a physical therapist in NYC was the fact that most patients had jobs that were literally running them into the ground. As a provider it felt like a constant uphill battle, basically just providing maintenance treatment and not really making any improvements.
Any good provider will stress the importance of not just treating the symptoms, but finding and fixing the cause. I can scrape, tape, mobilize, manipulate, and move you all day. But if the root of your problem is the stress of your job, the wear and tear it puts on your body, or the emotional toll that it’s taking, well then, that’s what needs to be changed.
I 100% realize that it’s not as simple as quitting your job tomorrow. I get it. But if you can’t figure out a way to improve that situation, please don’t expect any of your providers to magically cure whatever it is that ails you.
