DM #239: More good ? from my dude, @biomechanicaldetective.
Before I get into the nerdy stuff, gotta announce that he’s bringing his course to @VPSouthbay on March 25th-26th. The Maestro is DEFINITELY gonna be there, and if you’re smart, you’ll be there too.
So, what’s this DM all about? When we look at movement at as a whole, muscles with lengthen and REACT to control forces. When you ask someone to actively shorten a muscle in isolation to perform a movement, it’s not wrong, but it also won’t produce a normal looking movement. Ever try asking your patients to actively contract their glutes when they walk?!? Not one bit normal looking.
There’s definitely a time and a place for isolated shortening, especially when it comes to prehab, rehab, and things like body building. But, integration and normalization of movement requires lengthening. Plain and simple.
Wanna learn more? Buy his book (Real Movement), come to his course, and let’s all nerd out.
