DM #263: No pain, know gain. You don't have to kill yourself to get better.
Now, I'm not here to argue the merits of therapeutic discomfort, or the role of mild discomfort when doing eccentrics for tendon rehabilitation. No. I'm primarily concerned with discussing mobility work, and the fact that to improve your range of motion, or your flexibility, you don't need to crush yourself.
The mechanical changes that occur during mobility work are far outnumbered by the neurological accommodations. Translation: you're not breaking stuff apart, you're helping stuff slide better, and convincing the nervous system to give you more motion.
This is not to say that mobility work should be easy. Absolutely not. In reality, mobility work should probably be the most demanding thing that you do. If you move with intention, fight for and range, and hold some of these positions, you bet your ? you're going to be both physically and neurologically fatigued afterwards.
So, why the ego bruising? Because if you do it right and strip away all the compensations, you're likely to be extremely humbled by your mobility work. And that's a good thing. Less pain and torture, more intention and focus. Your body will thank you.
