DM #276: Most patients have no idea what those letters after your name mean, so before you go dropping your hard earned dollars on one million different certifications, make sure that you're taking that course for the right reasons. Now, you may look at me and all the letters I have after my name and say “well isn't that the pot calling the kettle black.” In my defense, I have a bunch more that I haven't listed ? but in all seriousness, hindsight is 20-20, and I can tell you with fair certainty that the majority of patients that come to my door have no idea what those letters mean, and most don't even know that I have them.
I had this very discussion with some students during CSM, and then again today with a practitioner who is been in the game for quite some time. More letters does not directly correlate with more patients. And as we all know, it definitely does not ensure a better practitioner.
I am clearly all about learning, and growing and taking continuing education. Hell, I work for a continuing education provider. However, my point is that if you simply want more patients, do better at marketing. Focus on that. Adding letters to the end of your name is not marketing. Remember, your colleagues are not your clientele. While they actually know what those those letters stand for, they ain't paying your bills.
Take-home message: Add letters to better yourself. Learn about and focus on marketing to improve your relevancy.
