DM #288: If you haven’t heard the ‘Fuzz Speech’ yet, do yourself a favor and go watch it. Yeah. Like, right now.
For those of you too busy/lazy/fascinated by what I have to say ? he’s talking about fascia and the fact that over time, the sliding surfaces between the fascial layers grow ‘fuzz’ and don’t slide so well. The more time spent not moving, the more fuzz that grows. The more fuzz that grows, the less that those sliding surfaces will slide. The less those surfaces are able to slide, the less that you’ll be able to move. Quite the pickle.
So, aside from this highlighting the theorized mechanical benefits of manual work (notice I’ve emphasized SLIDING, not breaking apart), I’ve made this tonight’s DM because of that word, ‘time’. Growing fuzz takes time. Losing mobility takes time. Regaining that mobility as it relates to decreasing the fuzz, improving sliding, and having a mechanical change at the tissues will take TIME!
All those before and after pictures you see on social media speak to mobility changes that have been granted by the nervous system (not actual mechanical changes), and will go away just as quickly as they appeared if not continuously reinforced with active movement. Mechanical changes, take, you guessed it, TIME.
So, my point. It took a habit to get into this, and it’s going to take a habit to get out of it. Mobility gains take time.
