DM #295: Where the head (and eyes) go, the body will follow.
If you’ve got cervical dysfunction, be it a mobility, strength, or motor control issue, it’s going to affect your movement. I guarantee it. If you can’t look and see where you’re going, your nervous system just isn’t going to as readily grant that movement to you. Ex: try running forward as fast as you can with your head turned to the side ?. The nervous system always seeks safety, and as such, a movement performed without the ability to see where the body is going is never going to be freely given.
Additionally, your body will default into a position of cervical safety/stability/strength. Ever wonder why lifters (myself included) look up despite all the social media coaches yelling at them to keep every single vertebrae of their spine in perfect alignment when they lift? ? They’re stronger (and from the nervous system’s perspective, safer) in that position. Plain and simple. (Not here to debate cervical position with lifting. Simply stating WHY it occurs ??♂️) So, my point, treat the painful areas, wherever they may be, but ALWAYS check the neck.
