DM #326: Had a dope discussion today with some of the brainy folks over at @rocktape and found myself needing to make this tonight's DM.

Now, recovery and down-regulation have been super hot topics and it seems like everywhere you look there's a new way to “hack” your system and get into more of a parasympathetic state. ?

Here's the deal, too much of ANYTHING is a bad thing. Parasympathetic dominance can and will jack you up just as badly as sympathetic dominance. (For those of you who don't know the difference: sympathetic – flight or fight ?? ; parasympathetic – rest and digest ? )

We learn best in a more parasympathetic state, and true, most folks with long-standing dysfunction and pain are in a more sympathetic state, but we must still be aware that the opposite exists, and furthermore that the goal isn't simply to get someone as parasympathetic as possible.

As with all things in life, balance is paramount. We want to have the freedom to bounce back and forth between these states, and be able to do so at the appropriate times. Moderation is key, and equilibrium is king. It's all about balance.
