DM #340: want your mobility gains to stick? Be active and make the nervous system feel safe.
—
Not here to debate the pros and cons of passive stretching; ain't nobody got time for that. Simply wanted to share a point that I brought up during today's course, and honestly, one that I bring up in every course that I teach.
—
Passively hang out in a stretch in an effort to gain mobility, and those “gains” are gonna be gone just to soon as quickly as they appeared. Why? Because you've given no actual information to the nervous system. You have shown the nervous system that “this is what this stretch feels like”, but you've failed to tell it that that sensation is safe and ok and that increasing the tolerance to that sensation won't be dangerous.
—
If you want those gains to stick you must show that nervous system that you deserve to have access to that range of motion, and that you are safe there. Aka, you gotta activate tissues. You must be active. You gotta put in work.
—
Alrighty, time to go prep for tomorrow's course and do some mobility work…actively ?
