DM #348: Stop blaming your piriformis.
—
My dude @mykinetichealth dropped this ? today and it was too good to not share. Been trying to think of a clever way to ask people to stop blaming their teeny piriformis for their multitude of hip pain and dysfunction and John swooped in and saved me the trouble. Gonna repost his words because it was just that good. Read up, learn some stuff, and while you're at it, go give him a follow.

“There is no one muscle that does one thing all by itself. So why in hell would your pain or dysfunction be caused by just one muscle? I hear it all the time with conditions like sciatica. If there is radiation of pain down the lower extremity it's automatically sciatica and that automatically means the problem is the piriformis, right? WRONG. Hey you might get lucky guessing once in a while, but I will not guess with my patients health and comfort. Pain is so diverse and so complicated that we must look closer into the human movement system to discover the true cause. This is why I love what I do. I take the time to solve the puzzle without guessing. I don't always win the prize, but at least I can see the big picture.”
