DM #403: Overhead this at the box the other day, “Yeah, he’s ALWAYS injured but he’s been in pretty good shape his whole life.” ?

Let’s not confuse having a six pack and being in good shape. Just because something LOOKS good by no means ensures that it is running optimally, or even well. If you’re always injured, you are absolutely not running at an optimal state. SOMETHING is wrong. Doesn’t have to be your mechanics. Could simply be overtraining. But those injuries are your body’s way of saying, “I’ve had enough.”

Greg Glassman actually did an excellent job with his sickness-wellness-fitness continuum model. If you are always injured, I don’t care if you’re working on your fitness, by definition you cannot say that you are well. Tissue health is a component of wellness, and if it’s always strained, sprained, fractured, torn, or just straight up busted…well, it ain’t healthy.

Now, for those of you out there who like to play devil’s advocate, I’m not talking about soreness. If you’re challenging your body, yeah, you’re gonna be sore. And I’m also not talking about the occasional injury. ? happens. I’m talking about the person who is always in pain. Always having to modify this or that. Always having to miss training, or even worse, deciding to be a superhero and just push through only to get even more injured.

Fitness builds on wellness which build on basic health, and tissue health is a component of that. A Ferrari that always breaks down is still a lemon. Don’t forget that.
