DM #415: Yup, still on my breathing kick. It’s just so gosh darn important.

So, quiet breathing, quiet respiration, call it what you want. The point is, you’re still using that word ‘quiet’, and that’s the focus of this DM. Folks write to me asking about assessing breathing and learning more about breathing, and as always, I recommend going after the big stuff, the obvious stuff, the low hanging fruit. If you’re just chilling there breathing, you shouldn’t sound like a French bulldog that’s just gone on a 3 mile run (can they even run that far?) In all honesty, you shouldn’t sound like that during or after physical activity either, but we’re just talking about QUIET breathing/respiration, so let’s stick to that.

Quiet breathing/respiration is also known in fancy speak as tidal breathing. Aka, this is the regular breathing that you do when you’re just sitting around, enjoying life. While we can break this down and analyze the ? out of it, if you want to start with the basics, just LISTEN. It shouldn’t sound like anything. No wheezing, or gasping, or gurgling, or any other nonsense. Quiet. Oh, and it should be happening via your nose…not your mouth.

So, what to do if you’re that bulldozer? Start working on your stuff! And for those of you thinking “I’ve always been a mouth breather,” or, “I breathe through my mouth because I alway have allergies,” I say: the human body is a REMARKABLE creation and you have the power to change a whole lot of stuff…if you’re willing to put in in whole lot of practice.
